Fremont-based Amprius Technologies will construct a new battery-making infrastructure at a current site in Brighton, Colorado. The move is part of its effort to ramp up its proprietary silicon anode li-ion battery cell production.

InsideEVs reports that these cells have a higher energy density than conventional graphite cells and are designed to be used in lithium-ion batteries.

🔋Big News🔋The future is near: We're expanding capacity with a gigawatt-hour scale factory site to meet overwhelming demand.

We're thankful to the @ColoradoEcoDevo, @GovofCO, @SenatorHick & countless others for their support!

Amprius’s new factory to start production in 2025

The latest factory will be constructed in stages. It is anticipated to start producing goods in 2025, with an initial output capacity of 500 megawatt-hours.

The facility has a footprint of 775,000 square feet. When the final stage of construction is finished, the potential output will be five gigawatt-hours per year.

It should be noted that there is already a factory on the site measuring 1.3 million square feet. However, the location was selected because it possesses the post-electric power and structural layout required for a new factory, all while maintaining a low cost.

When the new facility is completed, the total output of the location will be ten gigawatt-hours per year.

Amprius to receive financial funding

Colorado’s Governor, Jared Polis, spoke at the ceremony where the letter of intent signaling Amprius’ plans to grow in the state was signed:

“We need more batteries to power the future, and now we will be manufacturing more of them right here in Colorado. We are excited to welcome Amprius to Colorado, bringing over 300 new good-paying jobs and joining Colorado’s innovative and collaborative business community.”

Jared Polis, Colorado’s Governor

Amprius will be one of the first businesses in the United States to gain funding due to the bipartisan Infrastructure Law. It will help fund the initial phase of 500 MWh in part with a $50 million cost-sharing grant from the Department of Energy.

“The selection of Colorado for our gigawatt-scale factory marks an important milestone for Amprius.

We worked closely with the state of Colorado, the Colorado Economic Development Commission, Adams County, and the City of Brighton to align on terms that are mutually beneficial and include a comprehensive incentive proposal. Increasing production to meet the substantial market demand for our breakthrough silicon anode lithium-ion technology remains a priority, and we are confident this factory will allow us to scale and effectively serve the electric mobility market.”

Dr. Kang Sun, Chief Executive Officer of Amprius Technologies

The battery manufacturer takes great pride in its products being the market’s most energy-dense lithium-ion units. This achievement was made possible by the company’s silicon anode technology. It enabled the cells to be significantly more compact than graphite anode cells, which are more commonly found on the market.

Amprius claims that its currently available batteries have a capacity of up to 450 watt-hours per kilogram and 1,150 watt-hours per liter.
