Ride-hailing platform Uber revealed its roadmap for sustainable mobility at an event in Delhi on May 24, announcing plans to deploy 25,000 electric cars in India.
Uber has also announced the launch of Uber Green as part of its sustainability efforts in Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru in June, Mint reports.
“India’s huge scale and electrification momentum makes the country a priority for Uber as we seek to meet our commitment to electrify every ride on our platform by 2040.”
Andrew Macdonald, Senior VP of Mobility and Operations at Uber
It is worth noting that the country could soon be the location of Tesla’s next Gigafactory, considering the recent meetings its government had with the automaker.
Uber Green program
As part of the Uber Green program, the ride-hailing company will collaborate with SIDBI to extend its partnership with EV fleet providers, including Lithium Urban Technologies, Everest Fleet, and Moove, and provide 10 billion rupees ($122.3 million) in EV financing.
Under these partnerships, Uber will launch 25,000 EVs in the country on its platform for the following two years.
Apart from that, Uber will also partner with Zypp Electric to deploy 10,000 two-wheeler EVs in Delhi by 2024.
“We know that our impact goes beyond technology. We are determined to become allies of cities and governments as they seek to combat climate change and pollution through sustainable mobility.
With these industry-leading partnerships, we are matching commitment with action to help drivers go electric faster and supercharge sustainable transition in India’s ride-sharing industry.”
