Exports from Tesla’s Shanghai plant were largely flat in February compared to January, while shipments in China were considerably higher.
According to data released today by the China Passenger Car Association, Tesla China shipped 40,479 vehicles in February, a 3.24 percent increase from 39,208 in January and a 21.50 percent increase from 33,315 in the same month last year (CPCA).
Considering the fact that the CPCA previously published data indicating that the manufacturer of electric vehicles sold 74,402 vehicles made in China in February, this shows that Tesla supplied 33,923 vehicles in China in February.
Model Y has 51, 412 sales and Model 3 has 22,990 sales
The Model 3 sedan and the Model Y crossover are manufactured at the Shanghai plant that Tesla operates. According to the CPCA, in February, the Model Y manufactured in China had a total sales volume of 51,412 units, including exports, while the Model 3 had a total sales volume of 22,990.
Currently, no available sales figures differentiate between the Model 3 and the Model Y in China.
CnEVPost reports that the pattern that Tesla follows is that the local plant generates vehicles mainly for export during the first half of each quarter. It then shifts to producing vehicles for local delivery during the second half of each quarter.
China’s NEV sales totaled 439,000 in February
According to the CPCA, retail sales of new energy vehicles (NEVs) in China totaled 439,000 in February, including the sale of 295,000 battery electric vehicles (BEVs).
Figures indicate that Tesla’s share of the new energy vehicle (NEV) market in China was 7.73 percent in February, a decrease from the company’s 8.09 percent share in January. The 11.50 percent share of the BEV market in February decreased from the 12.56 percent share held in January.
Tesla’s Giga Shanghai facility is its biggest factory in the world, with a capacity of approximately 1.1 million vehicles per year.
According to a report published by Reuters on March 1 that cited people familiar with the matter, production of the redesigned Model 3 from Tesla is expected to begin in Shanghai in September. It has been given the codename Highland.
Tesla’s focus on production efficiency
Tesla’s goal with the Highland is to reduce production costs while simultaneously increasing the desirability of the electric sedan introduced in 2017.
Modifications will be made to the appearance of the new Model 3 and changes to the performance of its powertrain. The primary focus will be on increasing production efficiency.
According to the report, Tesla has separately requested bids from suppliers for interior and exterior parts for the Juniper Project version of the Model Y. Interestingly. It will go into production in the following year.
It is in addition to Tesla’s production of the Model 3. October 2024 is projected to be the month that the new Model Y production will get underway.
