Tesla has finally started to take the necessary measures to prevent early Cybertruck owners from flipping their electric pickup trucks within the first year following the delivery date.
The American electric vehicle giant has apparently banned one of the Cybertruck owners from ordering new units from the company.
Tesla bans future orders from no-resale policy violators
A Cybertruck Owners Club member, malinecentral, warned the online community about reselling their Cybertruck on Sunday. Tesla has apparently discovered his flipping attempt and cancelled his two other reservations.
“Be careful selling your Cybertruck! Tesla found sale listings, cancelled my other reservations and I may be blacklisted.”

malinecentral further noted that he has not yet sold the Cybertruck. Nonetheless, Tesla contacted him to inform him about the cancelled reservations after they caught his listing.
“Haven’t even sold yet. Just listed it. Loss and Prevention flagged me and Store Leader reached out to let me know they cancelled my other reservations.”

In an update, malinecentral indicated that Tesla refunded his two cancelled reservations for the Cybertruck. However, the Musk-led company warned him they would no longer refund the $100 reservation or $250 order fee if he attempted to place another order.
“Took delivery. Had two more reservations. They cancelled those and refunded. Said if I ever try to place an order again it will not be refunded. I have not sold anything. I listed it on multiple sites to feel it out. Based on the wording I may be blacklisted. It’s unclear to me if that is for a new CT only or any Tesla.”

As of now, it remains unclear if the order ban only applies to the Cybertruck or also to other Tesla electric vehicles.
Successful flipping attempts
Tesla’s move is somehow surprising, considering the recent successful flipping attempts of early Cybertruck owners. In fact, Chief Executive Elon Musk did not object to Ford buying the electric pickup from a flipper for $250,000 and even stated that “it was worth it.”
The Tesla boss’ remark prompted X users to ask if the company will no longer implement the “no sale in the first 12 months” policy for Cybertruck Foundation Series buyers.
In addition, a Porshe dealer won the bid for the early Cybertruck unit in Cox Automotive’s online marketplace Manheim for a whopping $244,000 on February 28. In a surprising turn of events, the Porsche of South Orlando put the electric truck for sale on its official website for an even higher amount of $289,999.
The Cybertruck unit is a dual-motor AWD variant with only 69 miles on the clock. For reference, its original price is only about $120,000.
Cybertruck’s no-resale policy
Tesla’s Cybertruck production is still in limited quantities. Therefore, the Musk-led company launched a no-resale policy to protect its revenue and customers from flipping attempts.
Tesla reintroduced the no-resale clause in its Cybertruck Motor Vehicle Purchase Agreement in early December 2023 after withdrawing it on November 14.
As part of the policy, Tesla warned prospective Cybertruck buyers and existing owners of a $50,000 penalty once they violate the no-resale policy:
“You understand and acknowledge that the Cybertruck will first be released in limited quantity. You agree that you will not sell or otherwise attempt to sell the Vehicle within the first year following your Vehicle’s delivery date. Tesla may seek injunctive relief to prevent the transfer of title of the Vehicle or demand liquidated damages from you in the amount of $50,000 or the value received as consideration for the sale or transfer, whichever is greater. Tesla may also refuse to sell you any future vehicles.”

Tesla is currently ramping up the Cybertruck’s production at Giga Texas in Austin. It expects the electric pickup to hit volume production within 12 to 18 months after the Delivery Event on November 30, 2023.
