Global plug-in electric car sales rose by 55% in October 2022

The worldwide campaign for electric vehicle adoption seems effective, with 932,000 new passenger plug-in electric car registrations in October. However, it somehow decreased from the previous month with 1,040,289 registrations.

According to data from EV-Volumes that Jose Pontes published, the October result represents a YoY increase of 55%. It holds 16% of the overall auto market worldwide. It is still a remarkable growth despite not surpassing last month’s record.

InsideEVs reported that all-electric vehicles continue to dominate sales, with about 641,000 units. Meanwhile, the Chinese market aids the plug-in hybrid segment to grow slightly quicker, up 60% vs. 54% in the position of BEVs. Notably, PHEVs only had a YoY increase of 5% beyond China.

Plug-in car registrations:

  • BEVs: about *641,000 (up 54% year-over-year) and 11% share
  • PHEVs: about *291,000 (up 60% year-over-year) and 5% share
  • Total: 932,191 (up 55% year-over-year) and 16% share

There were about 7.7 million new passenger plug-in electric car registrations year-to-date. It implies that reaching 10 million units in 2022 would be possible for the first time in the industry. For comparison, around 6.5 million plug-in electric cars were sold in the first 12 months of 2021.

Plug-in car registrations YTD:

  • BEVs: about *5.6 million and 9.4% share
  • PHEVs: about *2.1 million and 3.6% share
  • Total: 7,750,676 and roughly 13% share

Top 10 for the month:

  1. BYD Song Plus (BEV + PHEV) – 56,921
  2. Tesla Model Y – 46,025
  3. Wuling Hong Guang MINI EV – 41,255
  4. BYD Qin Plus (BEV+PHEV) – 32,201
  5. BYD Han (BEV + PHEV) – 31,554
  6. Tesla Model 3 – 28,696
  7. BYD Yuan Plus (BEV) – 27,521
  8. BYD Dolphin – 25,408
  9. BYD Tang (BEV + PHEV) – 17,323
  10. Volkswagen ID.4 – 15,429

In terms of BEVs and PHEVs combined, the BYD Song Plus had about 57,000 units registered in October. It is followed by the second placer Tesla Model Y with 46,025 registrations, representing a strong 1st month of the quarter for the American EV giant.

The Wuling Hong Guang MINI EV (41,255) came in third place, followed by two BYD families (Qin and Han). Interestingly, Tesla Model 3 seems to have a weak month compared to its sibling Model Y, with 28,696 registrations.

Two Tesla models dominated the rankings: Model Y had 568,965 registrations, and Model 3 had 365,274. The Tesla Model 3 is anticipated to maintain its second-place position with faster deliveries later this quarter.

On the other hand, the contest for third place is still going on between the BYD Song and the Wuling Hong Guang MINI EV.

Interestingly, only six models from non-Chinese brands are included in the top 20. It implies that Chinese manufacturers dominate the list.

BYD outsold Tesla by a significant margin in October, selling nearly 217,000 plug-in electric vehicles (including 103,157 BEVs). Meanwhile, Tesla had a record of 80,221 registrations. Remarkably, BYD topped the charts for eight consecutive months.

The joint venture between SAIC, GM, and Wuling ranked third with 46,359, trailed by Volkswagen with 38,191 and Changan with 34,145.

This month’s electric vehicle industry titan competition is totally breathtaking. It would be interesting to see how these brands fare in December since that month may make or break their year.
