German legacy automaker Volkswagen is exploring the potential comeback of the iconic Scirocco coupé as an all-electric car by 2028. According to Autocar, the model will feature a 1970s-styled design with a possible dual-motor, four-wheel-drive R flagship.
VW Scirocco to make a comeback with electric power
Volkswagen is reportedly examining the proposals for the planned Scirocco electric version, including internal design, engineering, and production.
It is apparently part of the brand’s four-way electric sports car project, including the Porsche Boxster/Cayman, Audi TT, and Cupra Dark Rebel, according to a “high-ranking insider.”
The three-door Scirocco will sit above the ID.3, which VW plans to fit with the classic Golf badge. The model’s initial design proposals were reportedly developed in early 2023, as soon as Andreas Mindt advanced as Volkswagen’s Head of Design.
What to expect from VW Scirocco?
The proposed Scirocco electric sports car is expected to ride on a distinctive platform developed for the impending Porsche Boxster EV, offering a low-riding sporty silhouette like the J1 that supports the Porsche Taycan.
The automaker has yet to reveal more details about the Scirocco EV but reports suggest that it will offer single-motor RWD and dual-motor AWD powertrain options.
In addition, previous reports speculate that VW integrated the battery pack within the vehicle’s center tunnel, behind the cabin, in a Boxster-like structure. It will allow the automaker to deliver the planned model a “low, driver-optimized seating position.” It is also expected to generate about 300 horsepower in RWD trim, while the AWD increases to more than 400 hp.
As for the design, former Bentley designer Adreas Mindt led the initial designs of the Scirocco EV as the new head designer.
“Scirocco was among the first cars to use a sharp and low line to visually enhance the car. That’s the secret sauce that makes a car desirable, a stylish car that everyone wants to drive.”

Scirocco history
Volkswagen initially introduced the first Scirocco, designed by Italian automotive designer Giorgio Giugiaro, at the 1974 Geneva Motor Show.
The German automaker proudly says that Scirocco paved the way for a low-cost, fuel-efficient sports car, owing to its four-wheel-drive.
The sports cars’ top GTI trim hit the market in 1976, featuring a larger front spoiler and 108 horsepower (81 kW) output. Meanwhile, the GLi version delivered a more luxurious design. The brand sold more than 500,000 units up until 1981.
Since then, VW started launching the Scirocco II underpinned by the Golf 1 platform. It offered additional interior space owing to its elongated body. It sold more than 795,000 models over 18 years before ceasing production in September 1992.
The Scirocco’s third-gen model came back in 2008, offering significant upgrades and more power in a mid-2014 update.
As per the source, VW aims to officially launch the Scirocco electric sports car by 2028. As of now, the model proposal awaits the approval of Chief Executive Thomas Shafer.
