American electric automaker Tesla dominated the US luxury car segment in 2022, overthrowing the former leader BMW, as reported by Teslarati. It is undoubtedly a remarkable achievement as Tesla is the first American automaker to win the position in nearly 25 years.

In retrospect, Tesla slipped from the first spot with just 23,244 sales disadvantages in 2021, per Automotive News. The first placer at that time was no other than the German automaker BMW. Finally, its 156,612 sales lead prevented its rivals from snatching the title in 2022.

Despite only offering limited models, 4 to be exact, Tesla managed to deliver more EVs in the US due to its production ramp-up.

Below are the top 8 best-selling luxury brands in the US in 2022, as estimated by Electrek:

Tesla’s US luxury car sales

The US luxury car segment saw a decline in sales last year, while the overall market declined by about 8%. Nonetheless, Tesla has reportedly sold a significant number of EVs, accumulating a 124,786-unit lead against its German rival through October.

“Our gate is really our limitation on volume right now in terms of supply.”

Shaun Bugbee of BMW North America

Tesla’s performance in the US luxury car segment saw a 44% growth to 491,000 sales in 2022, according to Automotive News Research & Data Center. Remarkably, it is a significant proportion of Tesla’s 1 million global deliveries.

Interestingly, luxury car customers demand EVs, but JD Power’s data and analytics VP claims that the company that solely sells EVs currently leads the market.

“If you want to be at the top of the luxury segment, you’ve got to beat Tesla, and you’ve got to do it with EVs.”

Tyson Jominy, JD Power’s data and analytics VP

Tesla’s overall sales in the US

Tesla’s US deliveries last year saw a YoY increase of 40%, while its production hit a YoY growth of 47%.

In Q4 2022 alone, the American automaker recorded 439,701 EV production and 405,278 deliveries.

For the entire year, Tesla reported a significant number of productions of 1,369,611 and 1,313,851 deliveries. Notably, these results marked its first one million-unit milestone. As per the report, the result excluded the first batch of Tesla’s all-electric Class 8 Semi trucks delivered to PepsiCo in December.
