Japanese legacy automaker Toyota has just announced in a press release that it officially signed a deal with industry leader Tesla for the North American Charging Standard (NACS).

The move will enable Toyota and Lexus brands to access Tesla’s enormous and reliable Supercharging network in the region by 2025.

Tesla welcomed its Japanese rival and now partner through an X post:

Agreement details

The agreement involves the integration of the NACS port into Toyota and Lexus’ electric vehicle vehicle offerings in North America starting in 2025. The world’s largest automaker by volume specifically outlined that the mix would include its upcoming three-row Toyota electric SUV that will undergo production at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Kentucky (TMMK).

Toyota also disclosed plans to provide NACS adapter to customers with Combined Charging System-equipped (CCS) electric vehicle models in the same year, including the Toyota bZ4X and Lexus RZ. It deviates from early NACS adopters’ intent to employ an adapter by 2024 to speed up the customers’ access to Tesla’s Supercharger network.

Big news from @Tesla! Their once proprietary charging connector is now open as the NACS.

This means more public stations can charge Teslas and non-Teslas can use the supercharging network! Huge. pic.twitter.com/WpuMxgtMqR

What’s special about Tesla Superchargers?

Toyota indicated that its customers currently benefit from more than 84,000 charging stalls in the region with both level 2 and DC fast chargers.

However, offering them Tesla’s Supercharger network will greatly improve the overall charging experience.

Notably, the industry recognizes the Tesla Supercharger network as the leading charging network, which is backed by multiple researches.

It operates over 12,000 Superchargers in North America that offer customers a superior charging experience and satisfaction over any other charging network.

Toyota has been accelerating its electrification strategy since the appointment of the new Chief Executive Officer, Koji Sato. Apart from integrating the NACS port into its next-gen models, the Japanese company also claims to have discovered a major breakthrough with solid-state battery technology. It can apparently offer an electric car with a 745-mile driving range and 10-minute charging time.
