Electric vehicle giant Tesla remains on track to finally kick off the production of the highly awaited next-gen Roadster electric sports car next year, Chief Executive Elon Musk confirmed.
Tesla Roadster production to begin next year
Tesla CEO Elon Musk reiterated plans to finally bring the iconic Roadster into the production line by 2025 during the Q4 2024 Earnings Call earlier this week.
The American billionaire announced that the electric automaker has achieved most of the engineering works on the next-gen Roadster electric sports car while some upgrades are still ongoing.
“With respect to Roadster, we’ve completed most of the engineering. And I think there’s still some upgrades we want to make to it, but we expect to be in production with Roadster next year. It will be something special.”

Brief history
Tesla initially introduced the Roadster’s next-gen prototype way back in 2017. It officially opened the pre-order books at the time, asking interested buyers to provide a $50,000 deposit fee for the expected $250,000 electric sports car.
Tesla originally promised to produce the Roadster in 2020. However, the company has delayed this schedule every year since then.
These years of delay caused significant doubts among EV and Tesla fans about whether the Roadster would ever hit the market.
In a major development, CEO Musk revived Roadster plans with ambitious flying capability promise in mid-June 2024. He asserted that the company will finally reveal the much-needed updated version of the next-gen Roadster at the end of this year ahead of the electric sports car’s market launch in 2025.
The Tesla boss reiterated these plans with his latest remarks during the Q4 2024 Earnings Call, further intensifying the excitement among interested buyers and EV fans.
What to expect from the “forever coming next” Roadster?
Tesla CEO Musk previously teased that the next-gen Roadster electric sports car will feature a “SpaceX package,” which includes cold air thrusters. This technology could theoretically enable the Roadster to “fly” or jump for short distances.
Therefore, it would not be surprising if Tesla actually ends up using SpaceX’s technology to deliver a true flying car in the near future.
In addition, recent remarks from the Tesla boss also revealed that the Roadster can accelerate from 0-60 mph in just below 1 second.
It remains to be seen if Tesla could actually bring the next-gen Roadster to production in 2025, considering CEO Musk’s reputation for setting too ambitious targets that face delays.
