Highlights
  • Tesla eclipses competition, selling ten times more than nearest rivals in the US.
  • Despite leading, Tesla sees a modest dip in its sales growth rate.
  • EVs are now 7% of total US car sales, with Tesla models priced below average.
  • Model Y and Model 3 continue to be popular choices, underpinning Tesla's market strength.
  • The US EV market on the verge of a breakthrough, with Tesla driving forward.

American electric automaker Tesla reportedly surpassed the sales of its closest rivals in the US market by ten times in the first three quarters of the year, Jerry’s study revealed. However, the Musk-led company demonstrated weak sales growth in the same period.

Study highlights

Teslarati reported the study’s data that electric vehicle sales in the US reached 873,000 units from Q1 to Q3 2023, owing to Tesla’s surging domestic sales.

These year-to-date sales results demonstrate the US market’s potential to hit the 1 million sales milestone in 2023. However, it must also be noted that its latest year-on-year sales growth of 49% indicates a slight decline from the 55% record in 2022.

It is also worth noting that EV models currently account for approximately 7% of all vehicles sold in the country, penetrating the 5% to 15% adoption rate range that prompted the widespread uptake of the new mobility in other nations.

“Tesla’s share of the electric vehicle market slipped again in the third quarter of this year, falling to the 50% threshold, as rising numbers of EV buyers opted for less expensive models as well as offerings by luxury brands such as BMW and Mercedes.”

Tesla Model Y and 3’s dominance is unsurprising, given their innovations and strategic pricing. According to the report, these models already sell below the average vehicle pricing in the US.

The all-electric crossover Tesla Model Y has a base price of $43,990 before options. Meanwhile, the e-sedan Tesla Model 3 starts at $38,990 before options. For reference, the average vehicle pricing in the US was $47,899 as of September 2023, Cox Automotive reported.

Despite the remarkable advancement in the US electric vehicle industry, the country has yet to address major barriers to widespread adoption. Some of these include the lack of reliable charging infrastructures and pricing that remains around 10% more expensive than the average car there.
