German sports car maker Porsche plans to finally decide on the potential production of the Mission X, an electric hypercar that may spawn its fastest model in history, “this year.”
Porshe to decide on Mission X’s future
Porsche previously asserted that the concept car is a mere design study, not for sale. However, the brand now seems to be considering bringing the electric hypercar into production.
We can expect to learn Porsche’s final decision on the potential production of the cutting-edge Mission X concept car by the end of 2024.
“With the concept we have shown the technology we want to put in the car, the performance profile, and the feedback we got at our 75-year celebration was massively positive, so it’s a great motivation for us to do the car.”
CEO Oliver Blume
However, Porsche must first guarantee the feasibility of the project before deciding.
What’s special about the Porsche Mission X electric hypercar?
Volkswagen-owned Porsche initially revealed the Mission X electric hypercar concept in June 2023, regarding it as a “technology beacon for the sports car of the future.”
Porsche further claims that the Mission X concept will be the “pinnacle of performance and modern luxury,” building on the success of its predecessors 959, Carrera GT, and 918 Spyder.
In addition, the German automaker expects the Mission X electric hypercar concept to become the “fastest road-legal vehicle around the Nürburgring” when it actually hits production.
Design and technical details
The Mission X electric hypercar concept has numerous new design features, such as the new Porsche crest.
Porsche developed the electric hypercar concept’s entire body with a carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) “exoskeleton.”
Inside, it has driver-focused features apparent in the asymmetrical design and color touches. Its yoke steering mirrors racing wheels with an open top for better visibility.
Porsche fitted the Mission X concept with a 900V system that charges about 2x faster than the Taycan Turbo S’ peak 350 kW charge rate.
It also generates a power output of approximately 1,500 horsepower. The concept car’s debut also revealed its power-to-weight ratio of about 1 hp per 2.2 lbs.
Porsche also noted that the electric hypercar will deliver more downforce than the GT3 RS, which is currently leading the industry with 409 kg (900 lbs) at 200 km/h (124 mph).
Interestingly, the automaker integrated the battery pack behind the driver rather than underneath the vehicle.
Porsche focuses on its latest projects for now, including the newly launched Macan EV and an updated Taycan model. It also plans to introduce an electric 718 Boxster in 2025, followed by the highly awaited Cayenne EV in the subsequent year.
It would be interesting to see the Mission X concept reaching production, which can aid Porsche in its goal to take back the crown in the Nürburgring race track.
