Tesla’s Model S Long Range beat all its all-electric rivals in a real-world summer range test conducted by Norwegian outlet Motor.no.

The summer range test featured 33 all-electric vehicles, including the Tesla Model S and models from BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and NIO.

NEWS: @Tesla Model S LR sets new record for winter distance in most comprehensive test ever in Norway 🇳🇴. Model S did a whopping 530km up form 521km, while second place was Mercedes EQE 300 with 409km #ExtendingTheLeadershipPosition https://t.co/9RYpJk40fq

Test and results

Motor.no conducted the test in an ideal setting, with dry weather and 59 to 68 degrees Fahrenheit (15-20 degrees Celsius) temperature. It is worth noting that the data in this article were converted from kilometers to miles.

“We drove the same route as always:

A loop through Oslo, up highway 4 via Lygnasæter towards Gjøvik, then onto the E6 at Mjøsbrua, and before we followed the E6 all the way to Dombås and Hjerkinn. Here we turned east towards Folldal, before going south over the Venabygdsfjellet and down to the E6 again at Ringebu. The cars that had more on the battery take another lap around the mountain – until it stopped.”

The Tesla Model S drove 418 miles before running out of charge, ultimately surpassing its WLTP-estimated range by a 6% difference. Temperatures ranged from just over 20C (68F) in the valleys to around 15C (59F) in the mountains, with bright skies, no breeze, and favorable weather, Teslarati noted.

A rear-wheel drive Polestar 2 ranked second in the real-world summer range test, managing to go 382 miles on a single charge.

China’s NIO ET7 4WD was third, with a real-world range of 367 miles on this recent test.

The all-new BMW i7 reached a 369-mile range, good enough for a 2.75-ton limo.

Meanwhile, two Mercedes-Benz models got in the top 10:  EQE 350 (358 miles) and EQS SUV (359 miles).

The Tesla Model S’ siblings Model Y Standard Range and Model X Plaid recorded a real-world range of 279 miles and 339 miles, respectively.

On both the publication’s winter and summer tests, the Tesla Model S Long Range emerged as the “range king.” It would be very challenging to beat, at least until vehicles with more range, like the Lucid Air, are included in the test. However, the Model S would undoubtedly have improved by then and could possibly travel farther.
