Tesla provided a few more updates about the highly awaited Cybertruck during the company’s recent Q2 2023 earnings call.
Interestingly, the all-electric pickup truck will feature a more energy-dense variant of the company’s own 4680 cells, which currently powers the best-selling Tesla Model Y from Giga Texas.
“Here in Texas we’re preparing to launch our Cybertruck cell, which has 10% higher energy density than current production. That was accomplished through process and mechanical design optimization.”
Drew Baglino, Tesla’s Senior VP for Powertrain and Energy Engineering
What’s the big deal?
Integrating an improved 4680 battery into the Cybertruck is a significant development, offering a 10% boost from the initial variant.
Notably, it can potentially enable the Cybertruck to have more driving range than initially expected. Furthermore, it can aid Tesla in equipping the all-electric pickup with a somewhat smaller battery pack that generates the same range as a lower energy-dense battery.
However, it must be noted that Tesla has yet to confirm the potential benefits of the improved energy density to customers.
Giga Texas’ cell production increased by 80% in Q2 2023
Apart from the improved energy density of the 4680 battery, VP Drew Baglino further revealed that Giga Texas’ battery cell production expanded by 80% in the second quarter of the year. The Tesla executive attributes the significant development to the 4680 cell manufacturing lines’ increased yield.
Additionally, Tesla also announced a 25% drop in its cell COGS (cost of goods sold), which the decreasing cost of raw materials may have driven.
Even more, VP Baglino proudly disclosed that Giga Texas successfully topped 10 million 4680 battery cell production in June.
In hindsight, Tesla CEO Musk introduced the plan to produce the company’s own “4680” battery cells to halve future battery costs.

Unfortunately, Tesla has yet to disclose additional information about the Cybertruck’s powertrain key specs and prices.
The company successfully produced the first model of the electric pickup on July 15, with plans to begin initial customer deliveries this year.
As of now, Tesla is testing the pickup across the world for its final certification.
“This might be the most unique vehicle product in decades; with that comes trialing and testing new technologies. Both technologically and architecturally, this vehicle will break a lot of boundaries—very much in line with how we think about vehicle engineering and manufacturing.”
