So what?
Tesla has advanced as a major player in the European electric vehicle market. It has continuously depended on the region, apart from China, to boost its global electric vehicle sales and demand.
The UK, which consists of England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland, and is a region that is a significant market. All EV makers are looking for their own pie from UK.
Therefore, Tesla’s strong presence in the UK is among the driving factors of its success as a whole. The Musk-led company reportedly dominated the local EV market ahead of MG and BMW last year and controlled a 14.9% share of the market. Tesla obviously does not dominate but it is the market leader.
EU-EVs revealed that the all-electric crossover Tesla Model Y was the top-selling model in the UK market in 2023, while its electric sedan sibling Model 3 landed the fourth spot in the sales rankings.
Tesla’s penetration of the UK market
The American electric automaker undoubtedly boosted the UK’s electric vehicle market to achieve record-breaking sales, especially last year. Apart from electric vehicle sales, Tesla also expanded its charging network in the country to accommodate the growing number of EVs on the roads.
In hindsight, Tesla officially penetrated the UK market in 2014 with the initial deliveries of the Model S electric sedan. The electric crossover Tesla Model X followed in 2016. Since then, the company has also launched the more popular Model 3 and Y in the region, which have significantly dominated the electric vehicle market in the UK.
Apart from ranking first in the electric vehicle segment, the Tesla Model Y landed the fifth spot in the overall vehicle sales ranking (regardless of powertrain) last year.
With the UK recently crossing its one-millionth electric vehicle sales milestone since 2022, the Musk-led company’s latest delivery achievement means that nearly one-fifth of all electric vehicles in the country are Teslas.
