Electric vehicle giant Tesla proudly announced on X that it had achieved its six millionth production milestone on March 29, 2024.
This significant accomplishment signifies Tesla’s commitment to defending its dominant position in the market despite the current slowdown in its growth rate.
Tesla produced its 6 millionth EV
Tesla expressed its appreciation to X for the team and owners of its electric vehicles worldwide, who enabled the company to achieve its 6th millionth production milestone.
“Produced our 6 millionth car!
Thank you to our owners & teams around the world for your support & hard work—it truly matters.”

The announcement comes just 4 days after Chinese rival BYD shared its 7 millionth new energy vehicle production milestone. However, it must be noted that the mix includes both plug-in hybrids and battery-electric vehicles, unlike Tesla, which only produces the latter.
EV production progress
Tesla’s success in producing its 6 millionth electric vehicle is indeed remarkable. In hindsight, it was able to make its first million electric cars in March 2020. Therefore, it took the company 12 years to cross this threshold since it started EV production.
After 18 months, Tesla successfully built its 2 millionth EV. Then, the Musk led company announced the production of its 3 millionth EV within 11 months. The achievement of the 4 millionth production milestone transpired in just seven months, or in early March 2023.
Tesla crossed the 5 millionth production in September 2023, indicating six months of progress. After another 6 months, the company has finally produced its 6 millionth electric car.
Was Tesla able to boost its production rate?
Looking at Tesla’s production progress outlined above, Tesla has not really increased its electric vehicle production rate over the last year.
It contradicts the Musk-led company’s claims that it was able to substantially boost its installed production capacity over 2023. Refer to the tables below:
Installed Annual Vehicle Capacity
Region | Model | Capacity | Status |
California | Model S / Model X | 100,000 | Production |
California | Model 3 / Model Y | 550,000 | Production |
Shanghai | Model 3 / Model Y | >750,000 | Production |
Berlin | Model Y | >250,000 | Production |
Texas | Model Y | >250,000 | Production |
Texas | Cybertruck | – | Tooling |
Nevada | Tesla Semi | – | Pilot production |
TBD | Roadster | – | In development |
TBD | Robotaxi & Others | – | In development |
Current Installed Annual Vehicle Capacity
Region | Model | Capacity | Status |
California | Model S / Model X | 100,000 | Production |
California | Model 3/ Model Y | 550,000 | Production |
Shanghai | Model 3/ Model Y | >950,000 | Production |
Berlin | Model Y | 375,000 | Production |
Texas | Model Y | >250,000 | Production |
Texas | Cybertruck | >125,000 | Production |
Nevada | Tesla Semi | – | Pilot production |
Various | Next Gen Platform | – | In development |
TBD | Roadster | – | In development |
However, it must be noted that Tesla does not always fully employ its installed production capacity, as the company matches it with the demand.
Nonetheless, Tesla’s 6 millionth electric vehicle production remains a considerable achievement. Considering the current production rate, Tesla will highly likely announce its 7 millionth electric vehicle production milestone sometime in the fourth quarter of the year or early 2025.
