Tesla sales in United States enjoyed a 23% year-on-year sales growth in its premium/luxury car segment to 616,970 units in Q1 2023, per Automotive News Research & Data Center.

Notably, leading American automaker Tesla noted a YoY sales growth of 55%, over twofold higher than the segment’s average. This significant increase marks the automaker’s track toward dominating a third of the US luxury car segment.

As you can see in the table above, BMW had 82,466 vehicle registrations in Q1 2023, indicating a YoY increase of 12%. Of that total, 17% were attributed to plug-in electric vehicles (around 14,000, including 6,588 BEVs). The German automaker held 13% of the segment, twofold lesser than Tesla.
The third placer Lexus reported sales growth of 6% YoY to 68,251 units. It is followed by German automaker Mercedes-Benz with a YoY sales decline of 1.2% to 61,531 units. Nonetheless, its BEV sales noted a YoY growth of 251% to 7,341 in the first quarter of 2023.
Lastly, Audi noted a YoY sales increase of 49% to 52,763 units.
Overall, the US sold about 616,970 premium car units in Q1 2023 alone. That said, it would be interesting to see how these brands would fare in the coming years, given that many startups are also starting to emerge.
