Tesla Giga Shanghai, also recognized as the world’s largest factory by annual production volume, has successfully produced its one millionth Model Y electric crossover.
The 1 millionth Tesla Model Y production is particularly remarkable, given that the company only launched the Giga Shanghai in 2019. At that time, Tesla only produced the Model 3 electric sedan there, followed by the launch of the “Phase 2 area,” which involved the production of the Model Y.
Tesla Model Y production progress
Tesla’s production of the Model Y at the Giga Shanghai only began in early 2021, approximately 30 months ago.
Although Tesla rapidly ramp-up EV production, the factory did not avoid major drawbacks over the past years. For instance, Tesla China has no choice but to halt Giga Shanghai’s operation in 2022 due to the COVID-19 restrictions in the country. Apart from that, the factory also struggled with global supply chain issues.
Nonetheless, the Chinese factory went back up and stood stronger than ever. The Giga Shanghai is Tesla’s current major EV export hub that delivers supply to numerous major markets, including the UK, New Zealand, Australia, and Asian countries like Thailand. Impressively, the Giga Shanghai also began supplying Model Y vehicles to Canada in early 2023.
All that said, CEO Elon Musk has constantly praised Giga Shanghai’s achievements over the past year. In his latest Chinese trip, the Tesla boss commended the factory’s employees for building EVs with the “highest quality.”
” It’s been incredibly impressive how you’ve been able to overcome so many difficulties and many challenges. It warms my heart, you know. And I tell people throughout the world — the cars we produce here are not just the most efficient in production, but the highest quality.”

Tesla Giga Shanghai is undoubtedly a standard for productivity and efficiency, reflecting a significant advancement from the company’s other factories worldwide.
That said, it is unsurprising that the facility is now Tesla’s largest factory by output. Moreover, the 1 million Model Y achievement is more impressive as the factory only produces two EVs, including the Model 3.
