Leading electric vehicle giant Tesla has announced another significant achievement of producing its 20,000th electric car at its Giga Texas factory, according to InsideEVs.
The fascinating news comes from Tesla’s Tweet on October 30. A fresh photo of a red Model Y with a “20k” sign surrounded by workers is attached to the Twitter post:
In retrospect, Tesla has just announced the production of its 10,000th car in Giga Texas, last September 17.
Tesla completed 10,000 Tesla Model Ys in just 43 days
Considering the newly available data, we estimate that 10,000 Tesla Model Ys were manufactured during the last 43 days (between September 17 and October 30).
According to Troy Teslike, Tesla produced the first 10,000 Model Ys in Texas in 108 days and the subsequent 10,000 in just 43 days.
In comparison to more than 1,000 cars per week estimated on August 20, it amounts to around 232 per day or more than 1,600 per week.
It is also worth noting that the Giga Shanghai factory managed to produce 20,000 cars “in exactly 100 days.” In contrast, Giga Berlin managed to do so “in 187 days.”
Tesla Giga Texas supply constraints
The company’s performance at Tesla Giga Texas is remarkable, considering the plant is building a brand-new Model Y with 4680-type cylindrical battery cells and a structural battery pack.
Notably, the strategy to build the standard model using cylindrical battery cells of type 2170 and a non-structural battery pack (like in other factories) was likely motivated by a severe constraint in the supply of the 4680-type cells. However, the ratio between the 4680 and 2170 Tesla Model Y in Texas is uncertain.
Furthermore, Tesla’s design studio does not yet have a distinct version of the new 4680-type Model Y.
These two versions are made concurrently, as per the report:
- Tesla Model Y AWD: 4680-type cells and structural battery pack
279 miles (449 km) of EPA range (19″ wheels) or 269 miles (433 km) with 20″ wheels
- Tesla Model Y Long Range AWD: 2170-type cells
330 miles (531 km) of EPA range (19″ wheels) or 318 miles (512 km) with 20″ wheels
The Tesla Cybertruck pickup will eventually be produced at the Tesla Giga Texas factory. Meanwhile, the automaker is still seeking an employee to fill the position of plant director, who oversees the entire Gigafactory Texas.
