Tesla China reportedly set a new high for Giga Shanghai by selling a record-breaking 100,291 locally produced electric vehicles in November, as reported by CnEVPost.
The Model 3 sedan and the Model Y crossover are locally produced by Tesla at its Shanghai facility. Notably, the EV manufacturing factory also serves as a Tesla export hub.
Tesla China’s remarkable sales record
The sum represents an increase of 39.87% from 71,704 EVs in October. Additionally, it indicates a YoY growth of 89.73% from 52,859 EVs last year.
Based on the data compiled by CnEVPost, 655,069 Chinese-made EVs were sold by the American automaker between January and November. That represents a YoY increase of 62.86% from 402,231 EVs last year.
It is worth noting that Tesla typically manufactures its cars for export in the first half of every quarter and local delivery in the second half. Therefore, the automaker’s outstanding November results in the Chinese market are no surprise.
Tesla China’s offerings
As of now, two Tesla Model 3 variants and three Model Y variants are offered by Tesla China.
Regarding the pricing, both models’ entry-level variants are less than RMB 300,000 before subsidies. Additionally, they qualify for the purchase subsidy set to expire at the end of the month.
Delivery Schedule
Tesla announced the delay in its delivery schedule for the Model 3 and Model Y in the country through the Tesla China website. As per the report, the delivery was moved to December 2022. Notably, these models had 1–5 week delivery estimates before this adjustment.
It is another smart move from the automaker as it will encourage local buyers to place their orders now. Essentially, an implicit guarantee that local consumers will still get the purchase subsidy this year is established when the projected delivery date is indicated as December.
Remarkably, Tesla’s efforts in the Chinese market have all paid off. For instance, the automaker increased Shanghai plant output, reduced prices for top-selling models, and provided incentives to Chinese customers.
