Electric vehicle giant Tesla is reportedly testing its controversial semi-autonomous driving technology, “Full Self-Driving,” in Australia, a driver platform that tracks Tesla software updates reveals.

BREAKING: Tesla's FSD Beta has arrived in Australia! 2023.12.10 installed on 2 cars – https://t.co/jRnJ6IKUzz pic.twitter.com/pwTNTkAfrX

Report highlights

Teslascope claims that the Musk-led automaker has hired employees for FSD testing on Australian roads, along with other foreign countries. Apart from that, the driver platform also indicated that Tesla is “actively testing” the software.

“Last year, we weren’t permitted to share specifics of the countries currently legally testing FSD. Now we can share more details! In addition to the United Kingdom, Tesla has hired and is actively testing FSD in Norway, Berlin/Germany, Australia, New Zealand, China, and more.”

Teslascope

The report emerged after Teslascope discovered an FSD beta version under the 2023.12.10 software update on two Tesla cars in Australia.

However, the FSD’s full deployment to Australian customers who have already paid up to $10,100 for the technology remains ambiguous.

Interestingly, recent reports of the FSD testing in Australia hint at a possible public launch. Notably, the FSD Beta has only been exclusive to the US and Canadian markets since October 2020, with over 400,000 installations.

The report also indicated that specific testing routes vary from country to country to adhere to legal standards. Apparently, using an employee-owned car on company time offers more “freedom” for testing.

Apart from that, overall employee opinion is also reported to be optimistic.

All that said, the driver platform commended Tesla’s Autopilot and AI team for their increasing efforts toward achieving full autonomy.

“We believe, while still just our opinion, @Tesla has put together the necessary pieces for navigating autonomy and Full-Self Driving (Beta) roadblocks.”

Despite Tesla’s advancements in its autonomous driving technologies, US regulators remain reluctant to adopt the software. They cite safety issues, including a series of high-profile crashes that involves the system.
