What’s special about the 800-volt architecture?

Equipping the Cybertruck with an 800v architecture enables Tesla to address two of the major concerns in the electric vehicle industry: charging times and weight.

Moreover, it also offers significant benefits in terms of efficiency and margins.

Boost margins

As EV-a2z reported, Tesla Chief Elon Musk warned investors about high-interest rates and economic uncertainty that may affect the automaker’s performance in the coming quarters.

CEO Musk also forecasts Cybertruck to take 18 months to deliver a positive cash flow. In that context, the 800v architecture can boost margins on the Cybertruck due to its cost savings.

“For very heavy vehicles, a high voltage powertrain architecture brings notable cost savings, which is why Cybertruck will adopt an 800-volt architecture.”

Reduced weight

In addition, its minimal copper component cuts the Cybertruck’s weight. In effect, it enables longer range and better performance.

“…the vehicle’s gross weight has two classes: G, which would be between 8,001 and 9,000 pounds, and H, which is between 9,001 and 10,000 pounds.”

Efficiency and fast charging

As for efficiency, 800v architectures transmit low-current electricity from the battery to the wheels. In effect, it minimizes power lost due to heat.

Due to copper reduction, lower current architectures may transfer the same amount of power down thinner wires.

More significantly, it supports Tesla Superchargers’ highest charging capacity. The V4 Superchargers offer a 350 kW output due to its higher amperage and current ratings. It is 100 kW higher than all Tesla models currently access, as noted by Torque News.

Charging remains one of the major hassles of owning an electric vehicle. Now that Tesla has already confirmed plans to utilize 800v architecture for the Cybertruck, many customers will surely benefit from Superchargers’ highest capacity. It can also attract more customers to buy the Cybertruck, boosting the company’s financials.

Tesla is set to deliver the Cybertruck on November 30, 2023.
