Leading American automaker Tesla, through its Chinese business arm, will participate in the upcoming 2023 Shenzhen Auto Show starting on June 16, 2023, CnEVPost reports citing show organizers’ confirmation.

The 2023 Guangdong Hong Kong Macao Greater Bay Area International Auto Show is scheduled to take place at the Shenzhen Convention & Exhibition Center in Futian District from June 16 to 24. The Shenzhen Convention and Exhibition Center will hold the 2023 Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area International Auto Show, commonly known as the 2023 Shenzhen Auto Show.

What’s the big deal?

Apart from the huge possibility that Tesla may finally unveil the highly-awaited refreshed Model 3 (known as Project Highland), it also marks the automaker’s first participation in a Chinese auto show since a dramatic exhibition in April 2021.

In retrospect, a female Tesla owner climbed on a Model 3 display unit at the automaker’s booth to protest at the Shanghai Auto Show on April 19, 2021. That time, the protester accused Tesla cars of brake failure.

On April 19th, 2021, a woman climbed on top of a Tesla Model 3 during the Shanghai Auto Show to tell everyone that the brakes on her Tesla failed.

Security tried to hide her from the audience with umbrellas while she repeatedly screamed, "Tesla brakes fail!" (特斯拉剎車失靈!) pic.twitter.com/kmmcQvygGc

In response, Tesla released relevant data to defend its electric cars. Nonetheless, the protest received major media coverage, adversely affecting Tesla in the process. The dispute is reportedly still ongoing as of today, per CnEVPost.

Since that incident, the Musk-led automaker stopped joining any more Chinese auto shows, even the one in Shanghai two months ago.

All that said, Tesla seems now ready to try its luck in dedicated auto shows in China with its decision to participate in the 2023 Shenzhen Auto Show.

Indeed, a presence at the local expo is a strategic move, given that Tesla’s China headquarters are in Shanghai. Tesla may be planning to take advantage of the major event to showcase its refreshed Model 3.

For those interested in the event, the 2023 Shenzhen Auto Show’s media day is June 16. Meanwhile, general admission will open from June 17-24, 2023. Notably, Tesla’s booth will be in Hall 9 on the 1st floor of the building.
