Leading American electric automaker Tesla, through its Chinese arm, sold 77,695 units in May, Reuters reports citing China Passenger Car Association’s (CPCA) latest data.
That result, including exports to foreign markets, indicates a noticeable growth of 2.4% from the previous month. Year-on-year, sales grew about 142% from the 32,165-unit record in the same month last year.
This year to date, Tesla China had sales of 382,859 electric cars, up 77.37% from the 215,851 units in the same period in 2022, CnEVPost reports. However, it must be noted that the COVID-related lockdowns and restrictions impeded the automaker’s performance last year.
Why does it matter?
Tesla China’s performance last month is indeed encouraging for the growth of the EV giant in the world’s largest automotive market.
If anything, it indicates that Tesla’s all-electric car demand is consistent despite the recent decline in Model 3 sales in China, which was probably caused by buyers’ eagerness for Project Highland.
The overview of Tesla China’s sales in May would be fascinating to observe, given the buzz surrounding the Model 3 Project Highland update, which is set to start production in September.
Additionally, knowing how many cars were shipped from the Shanghai Gigafactory to other countries would also be intriguing. After all, the location has developed into Tesla’s main car export base.
