Billionaire and Tesla boss Elon Musk’s recent Twitter posts sparked speculations about the potential pricing of the highly awaited Cybertruck, hinting at a price cheaper than initially expected.
In hindsight, Tesla has already disclosed the Cybertruck’s prices in 2019. At that time, the Single Motor RWD was US$39,990, the Dual Motor AWD was US$49,990, and the Tri-Motor AWD was US$69,990. However, the automaker withdrew these prices after around two years as it faced production challenges.
In that sense, the currently growing price war in the electric vehicle industry may push the automaker to reduce the pricing of the pickup before it becomes widely available to customers.
For instance, CEO Musk commented on the recent price reduction of the Cybertruck’s closest rival in the US, the F-150 Lightning. Ford reduced its price by up to $10,000, now selling at a base price of $49,995. Despite this substantial discount, the Tesla boss seems to still see the pickup as too expensive:
“The Ford Lightning is a good vehicle, just somewhat expensive, especially given the high interest rates these days for any kind of loan.”
Tesla CEO Elon Musk
It must be noted that this remark might just be an offhand statement from the billionaire. However, most of his Twitter followers have already concluded that the Cybertruck will be cheaper than originally anticipated.
That is unsurprising, given that CEO Musk thinks $49,995 is “somewhat expensive” for a competitor. Therefore, Tesla may offer the Cybertruck at a price under $50,000.
Expert’s insight
The Cybertruck production has struggled with multiple delays. After years of disappointment, the automaker has officially started production, with the first one finally rolling off the assembly line recently.
However, contrary to speculations, an expert in electric vehicles has a different outlook on Cybertruck’s potential pricing.
Electrek Editor-in-Chief Fred Lambert shared his estimates on the pricing of the Cybertruck and its configurations:
Configuration | Range | Acceleration | Top Speed | Base Price |
Dual Motor AWD | 300+ miles of range | 0-60 mph in 4.5 seconds | 120 mph | $60,000 |
Tri Motor AWD | 400+ miles of range | 0-60 mph in 2.9 seconds | 130 mph | $75,000 |
Quad Motor AWD | 450+ miles of range | 0-60 mph in 2.5 seconds | 130 mph | $85,000 |

Notably, CEO Musk stated before that Tesla will offer a Quad motor configuration for the Cybertruck. In that sense, Lambert suggests that the single and dual-motor options would take a long time to hit the market, probably around 2025. He further noted that Tesla may initially launch the quad motor. However, he suggests that its price would not sell below $80,000, the price cap for the $7,500 federal tax credit. https://twitter.com/DimaZeniuk/status/1678123246045020169
