Electric vehicle giant Tesla proudly announced through its official Weibo account that its global electric vehicle production has successfully reached the five millionth unit milestone at Giga Shanghai on September 17.
Notably, the Jubilee model was a new Tesla Model 3 Highland with a Pearl White body paint.
Production milestones
In hindsight, Tesla achieved its first millionth EV production record in March 2020. It demonstrates the company’s 12-year-long hard work, as noted by InsideEVs.
Its two millionth milestone followed within 18 months. Then, it hit the three millionth unit threshold within 11 months. The four millionth e-car production occurred in just seven months.
Now, Tesla has achieved another million EV production just over six months ago.
Installed production output per year
Tesla has multiple production centers in various regions, including California, Shanghai, Berlin, Texas, and Nevada, among others. Each factory has its own assigned models to produce with different annual production outputs.
Presented below is Tesla’s listing of its installed production capacity per year at its global EV factories:
Region | Model | Capacity | Status |
California | Model S / Model X | 100,000 | Production |
Model 3 / Model Y | 550,000 | Production | |
Shanghai | Model 3 / Model Y | >750,000 | Production |
Berlin | Model Y | 375,000 | Production |
Texas | Model Y | >250,000 | Production |
Cybertruck | – | Tooling | |
Nevada | Tesla Semi | – | Pilot production |
Various | Next Gen Platform | – | In development |
TBD | Roadster | – | In development |
Tesla previously warned there would be a production slowdown in the third quarter due to its planned factory upgrades. Nonetheless, the imminent addition of the Cybertruck to that capacity column will surely accelerate the company’s production.
2030 production target
Tesla aims to hit an annual production output of 20 million electric cars by 2030. It is crucial for the automaker’s strategy to lead the global shift to sustainable and clean mobility.
That said, Tesla strives to continuously achieve innovations and production improvements to achieve this ambitious target. Some of these improvements include factory upgrades and the development of new battery technologies to enhance performance and cut production costs.
Tesla is also exploring possibilities to erect a new factory in India, depending on the success of its current negotiations with the government.
