American electric automaker Tesla has reportedly raised almost €149 million in funds from the European Union to support its V4 Supercharger expansion efforts in the region.
According to Teslarati, the Musk-led company will likely utilize the funds to deploy or upgrade more than 7,000 V4 Superchargers.
EU to spend €352M for EV infrastructures
The EU aims to boost its funding for electric vehicle infrastructure schemes with new €352 million funds for a total of 26 selected projects.
These projects will focus on the development of new charging and hydrogen-filling facilities. It will also fund projects that aim to electrify airports and ports, Electrive.net reported.
The 26 projects selected under the Connecting Europe Facility were part of the Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Facility’s (AFIF) fourth round of funding.
According to the report, Tesla is the largest benefactor of this funding round. As mentioned, Tesla secured €148.7 million from the AFIF.
Tesla’s two Supercharger projects in the EU
The CEF selected two projects from the Musk-led company under Tesla Italy (€133,780,000) and Tesla Poland (€14,940,000) with a total value of €148,720,000.
As Tesla Italy’s project indicates, Tesla aims to expand the projects from these local arms to other countries.
“The project aims at deploying 6,458 recharging points (250 kW) for LDV in 613 locations in 16 countries (AT, BE, BG, DE, ES, FI, FR, IE, IT, LV, LT, LU, NL, RO, SK, SE) along the Core and Comprehensive Network. The project foresees both the deployment of new recharging stations and the replacement of existing outdated recharging points not satisfying the requirement of the call in terms of recharging capacity and open-accessibility.”

Meanwhile, Tesla Poland will deploy new Supercharger equipment in six foreign countries.
The project aims to deploy 740 recharging points (250 kW) for LDV in 74 locations in 6 countries (CZ, EL, HR, HU, PL, SI) along the Core and Comprehensive Network. The project foresees both the deployment of new recharging stations and the replacement of existing outdated recharging points not satisfying the requirement of the call in terms of recharging capacity and open-accessibility.”

These projects hint that Tesla aims to replace existing Supercharging stalls with the V4 technology, as the descriptions included the “open-accessibility” term. Moreover, Tesla has also started deploying the V4 Superchargers in the EU in early 2023. That said, it is only natural for Tesla to expand it.
