Indian legacy automaker Tata Motors is again accelerating its electrification efforts with a strong dedication to preparing its workforce for the major transportation shift in India.
According to the press release, the move is crucial for the company to establish a “future-ready workforce” for the automotive industry.
Tata’s training and development programs
Tata Motors aims to train more than 50% of its workforce with advanced auto technology skills and knowledge in a 5-year period.
The company has already accumulated over 3,40,000 hours in technological training and development for its workforce through the following four programs:
- Certification in CESS through collaboration with Tech Partners – Tata Motors partnered with organizations like ARAI, Bosch, Mathworks, SAE, Tata Technologies Limited, etc., to equip its workers with professional certification in Connected, Electric, Shared, and Safe (CESS).
- Transforming mechanics to auto electronics – Tata and local universities jointly developed courses to offer higher education opportunities for its workers, such as B.Tech, M.Tech, and Executive MBA.
- Higher education for shopfloor Technicians – Tata developed a program to aid its shopfloor technicians in achieving an Engineering Diploma.
- Digital Transformation and E-Learning – Tata has also employed virtual learning through digital classrooms for all its workers, offering convenient and accessible learning.
Moreover, Tata Motors also collaborated with Ganpat University to train all ex-Ford workers after acquiring the Ford India factory in January 2023.
The Indian automaker and Ganpat University jointly developed curated learning and training programs with advanced production technologies, such as follows:
- Industry 4.0, Smart Manufacturing
- Advanced Control Engineering
- Advanced Manufacturing Systems and Processes
They also offered learning opportunities for cutting-edge vehicle systems through classroom setup sessions and practical training, including ADAS, Connected cars, CESS, Control systems, etc. Tata indicated that this program had three levels, which are as follows:
- Postgraduate (MTech)
- Graduate (BTech)
- Diploma
The automaker initially launched these courses in February 2023, with more than 820 enrolees.

Apprenticeship program
Tata also developed its flagship full-time Apprenticeship Program as it aims to hone the youth with the necessary skills for the future of the automotive industry.
The program apparently trains students with in-demand auto tech capabilities, such as mechatronics, IoT, robotics, and AI.
The program currently has 13,000+ students. Remarkably, over 88% of students who passed the apprenticeship program have embarked on their careers working alongside channel partners.
Significance
These training and development programs align with the company’s goal of leading the electric vehicle transition in India.
Moreover, it also enables the company to aid the country in establishing a strong and competitive electric vehicle manufacturing industry.

Tata Motors aims to have electric vehicles account for 50% of its overall vehicle sales by 2030. To achieve that, the company will launch four new EV models as early as 2024.
All that said, training its workforce will significantly pay off as they can aid the company in producing these upcoming electric SUVs.
