Tata targets 50% passenger EV sales by 2030

Tata aims to have its electric vehicle models account for 50% of its new passenger car sales by 2030. That said, it is crucial for the automaker to intensify its electrification strategy.

In that sense, Tata Passenger Electric Mobility Managing Director Shailesh Chandra revealed the company’s plans to separate the sales network of its EV portfolio.

“Tata.ev showrooms will evolve over time. This is necessary due to the new brand identity we have created to provide a differentiated experience to buyers. Simultaneously, we must ensure that the scale reaches a level viable for our channel partners.”

Shailesh Chandra, Tata Passenger Electric Mobility Managing Director

Mr. Chandra noted that this move is crucial for the company to immediately deploy these EV-exclusive outlets in select Indian cities.

“Our EV portfolio will also expand in the coming years, so we need to consider this, or else we won’t be doing justice to both the internal combustion engine (ICE) and EV portfolios in the same showroom. We will assess this in the coming quarters.”

Shailesh Chandra, Tata Passenger Electric Mobility Managing Director

The senior executive further noted that separating the sales network of the Tata.ev brand will enable the company to manage the space and operation for both EVs and traditional offerings.

“We’ll have to separate them (sales outlets for EVs and ICE) given that we have different requirements of customers and also a growing portfolio (of EVs). We need to separate outlets because there would not be enough space to keep both EVs, ICE models at the same place..So there’s a practical difficulty… we will not be able to do justice to both. So you will start seeing exclusive outlets starting slowly from the coming quarters.”

Three more EVs are in the pipeline for early 2024

Apart from the new Nexon EV, Tata Motors will also launch the Harrier EV, Punch EV, and Curvv EV under its plan to have four new models by early 2024.

The earliest Nexon and Punch offerings were internal combustion engine-powered vehicles. However, they will now have an all-electric counterpart under the company’s Gen 1 offerings,  TOT reported.

Tata is planning to launch four new Electric SUVs by early 2024.

This includes the Nexon EV in September, followed by Harrier EV. Then the Punch EV and Curvv EV will be launched

The Harrier will be part of the Gen 2 offerings as it has a more EV-dedicated development. Meanwhile, the last phase will include the Gen 3 models like the Avinya EV.

According to the report, Tata will produce the Gen 3 models from the ground up. It will also not arrive in early 2024, unlike the Gen 1 and Gen 2 models.
