American semiconductor firm Qualcomm believes that future cars will feature a voice assistant technology as intelligent as ChatGPT and effectively converse with drivers and passengers, T3 reports.
Interestingly, Qualcomm has also just upgraded its Digital Chassis, which is a connected vehicle platform. Therefore, the company may have achieved significant advancements in its technology related to voice assistant software.
Qualcomm’s outlook
The semiconductor giant envisions that future cars, regardless of powertrain, will feature generative AI technologies similar to ChatGPT.
It will have cloud integration capable of facilitating a seamless interaction with the driver.
As the report noted, current technology already enables simple commands like “navigate home” and “play the radio.” However, future cars will have more competitive and intelligent capabilities for performing and responding to advanced requests.
Some of Qualcomm’s visions for in-car voice assistant technologies include the following command improvements:
- “Take me on the most scenic route and point out some beautiful spots along the way”
- “Place an order from my favourite Italian restaurant to arrive at my door just after I pull into the driveway from picking up the kids at soccer practice”
According to Qualcomm’s General Manager of Automotive, generative AI technologies like ChatGPT can “improve the quality of really anything that you’re doing in the vehicle.”
Medium simplified the concept by indicating that cars “could have a mix of AI superpowers right in the vehicle and some extra magic up in the cloud.”
Qualcomm and SoundHound partnership for automotive Chat AI development
Qualcomm also formed a partnership with speech recognition firm SoundHound for the ChatGPT-like generative AI for automobiles, named SoundHound Chat AI.
“Drivers and passengers can ask just about any question and receive a response from a system that can draw upon more than 100 information domains.”
Qualcomm
T3 writer Alistair Charlton had an opportunity to see the demonstration of the new technology at the IAA Munich motor show hosted by Qualcomm.
According to Charlton, a fellow journalist commanded the software to close the door. Surprisingly, the system knew which of the doors to close based on the journalist’s seat.
The AI itself also generates photos of navigation destinations instead of retrieving some online.

Qualcomm’s vision of a future where ChatGPT-smart voice assistants can perform more complex tasks in the car while others are processed in the cloud and returned through a data connection is indeed exciting for the automotive industry. It can significantly reshape the automotive industry, where drivers and passengers can easily navigate the car and its features through AI-based voice assistants.
