German EV brand Smart apparently plans to officially debut its second model, #3, at the Shanghai Auto Show on April 17, 2023. The debut of the new EV came about a year after the automaker introduced the Smart #1 model.
About the Smart #3
The Mercedes–Geely JV developed the Smart #3 model as a coupe-style all-electric SUV. It is expected to be “bigger, roomier and sportier” than the first model #1, as Smart Europe CEO Dirk Adelmann stated via Automotive News Europe.
The overall design of the crossover was disclosed in November by pictures leaked from China’s Ministry of Information Technology in November 2022. It has a similar front appearance to the company’s debut electric model. A slanted windshield and a sloping roofline give the #3 a coupe-like appearance.
Apart from the design, it was also revealed that the new EV would offer a minimum of two power outputs, which may imply a single and dual motor configuration. Motor1.com claims that the power outputs would provide horsepower similar to the #1 model, which is either 152hp or 268 hp.
The leaked photos also unveiled the EV’s dimensions. Apparently, the #3 has a length of around 4400 mm long, a width of 1800 mm, and a height of 1600 mm tall. Meanwhile, its wheelbase is about 2785 mm.
Another confirmed detail is that the #3 model will use Geely’s Sustainable Experience Architecture (SEA) platform, also used by #1.
As for the range and battery size, we will probably have to wait until the company’s official announcement.
Smart to offer new model per year until 2027
Smart’s small electric SUV #1 has recently reached dealers and customers in Europe. Interestingly, the EV brand will debut a new model annually until 2027. Therefore, Smart will eventually have five to six models by that time, as noted by CEO Adelmann.
