Tesla’s upgraded Model 3 electric sedan continues to disrupt the Australian automotive market as it gained more sales than its sibling, Tesla Model Y, in February 2024.
Tesla’s footprint in the Australian EV market
The upgraded Tesla Model 3 advanced to the third spot in Australia’s model sales ranking with 3,593 units sold last month, according to the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries’ data. It trailed behind two popular ICE-powered utes, the Ford Ranger (5,353) and Toyota Hilux (4403).
On the other hand, the Tesla Model Y crossover’s sales reached 2,072 units in February 2024 alone, enabling it to secure the 6th spot.
However, it must be noted that the two Tesla EVs are the top-selling models when it comes to electric vehicle sales ranking.
The growing popularity of the Tesla Model 3 and established foothold of the Tesla Model Y enabled the Musk-led company to enjoy a market share increase to 5.4% last month from just 4% in the same period last year, techAU reported.

EV market share hits 9.63% in Australia
Tesla’s new Model 3 and Model Y played a crucial role in expanding Australia’s electric vehicle industry.
The local market reportedly sold a total of 10,111 electric vehicles in February alone, up from just 5,932 sales in the same period last year. This remarkable sales result substantially increased the segment’s market share to 9.63%.
“Growing sales of electric vehicles across other market segments proves that where a battery electric product exists which suits the driving habits of Australian motorists, work and recreation needs they will purchase these vehicles.”
FCAI Chief Executive Tony Weber
Tesla is undoubtedly a strong player in Australia’s automotive industry, even overthrowing most gas-powered vehicles in terms of sales. These February 2024 sales results only highlight the Australian customers’ preference for innovative and reliable electric vehicles over cheaper models with less range and technology.
