German legacy automaker Porsche just announced Monday that its first road-going 911 hybrid model will debut on May 28, 2024.
Porsche electrifies its iconic sports car
According to the press release, Porsche is preparing to officially unveil its first production-ready 911 sports car with a hybrid powertrain later this month.
The German automaker has successfully completed the Porsche 911 HEV’s extensive development and testing program, bringing the iconic sports car into the electric era.
“For the first time in our icon’s 61-year history, we are installing a hybrid drive system in a roadgoing 911. This innovative performance hybrid makes the 911 even more dynamic. We left nothing to chance during development and tested the new 911 under all sorts of conditions all over the world.”
Frank Moser, Vice President Model Line 911 and 718
Porsche revealed that the new hybrid sports car had accumulated 3.1 million miles without a hitch during the development and testing process. Some of this mileage comes from the race track in Nürburg, Rhineland-Palatinate.
The test car features standard road tires and an aero kit with a fixed rear wing, increasing its downforce at high speeds.
Nurburgring Nordschleife performance
Porsche noted that testing on the Nürburgring Nordschleife played a crucial role in developing the 911 HEV.
At the time, Porsche brand ambassador Jörg Bergmeister finished a lap of the circuit in just 7:16.934 minutes. It reportedly indicates an 8.7-second headway compared to “the corresponding version of the predecessor model.”
The available images did not unveil badges. However, the absence of extravagant bodywork points suggests something more moderate. Porsche also noted that the sports car primarily aims at performance rather than efficiency.
“The new 911 has become considerably faster on the track. We have more grip, significantly more power, and the spontaneous response of the performance hybrid is a great advantage.”
