German sports car maker Porsche is further accelerating its electric vehicle transition with the looming phase-out of its internal combustion engine-powered Macan and 718 lines, Reuters reports, citing a company executive’s interview with the magazine Automobilwoche.
Porsche to halt combustion Macan production past 2026
Despite the recent slowdown in demand for battery-powered vehicles, Porsche remains committed to electrifying some of its iconic models.
According to Porsche executive board member Albrecht Reimold, the gas-powered Macan SUV for non-European markets will officially halt production by 2026.
“The platform has reached the end of its cycle.”

Porsche also downplayed a report by Automobilwoche, stating its electric vehicle timeline remains the same.
Reimold noted that Porsche plans to pour its efforts and resources into the electric Macan models, aligning with the brand’s sustainability agenda despite the recent waning demand for electric vehicles.
“I don’t let the success (of the electric Macan) be defined by a single number.”

Electric Boxster and Cayman sports cars to arrive in 2025
The Porsche executive board member also disclosed the German automaker’s plans to cease producing its gas-powered Boxster and Cayman sports cars, dubbed the “718 line,” by 2025.
Porsche is currently working to develop the 718 line’s battery-electric vehicle versions, with plans to launch them as early as next year.
It is also worth noting that Porsche has already ceased the production of the gas-powered versions of the iconic Macan and 718 for European markets.
The newly launched Macan EV secured 10,000 orders in early March 2024, even before the official debut. The upcoming electric versions of the Boxster and Cayman sports cars will also undoubtedly play a crucial role in Porsche’s goal of having electric vehicles account for over 80% of its global sales by 2030.
