A new EV market share record was reached in France in June, rising from 19.8% year over year to a new high of 26.9%. While plugin hybrids increased from 7.0% to 9.4%, full electrics grew from 12.8% to 17.4%.
Generally, auto volume was 190,847 units, up 12% yearly but still below long-term norms, with plugins accounting for almost all of the growth.
The Tesla Model Y was the best-selling BEV in June, just in front of its sibling, the Tesla Model 3.
The combined plugin result for June was 26.9%, with 17.4% being full electrics (BEVs) and 9.4% being plugin hybrids (PHEVs). These figures compared to 19.8%, 12.8%, and 7.0%, respectively, a year ago.
Volume-wise, BEVs increased by 52% year-over-year to a new record-high 33,279 units, while PHEVs increased by 50% to 17,969 units. This is the highest YoY volume growth for plugins since late 2021, and it accounts for more than 90% of the headline YoY auto market volume growth in June.
The combined combustion-only share fell to a new low of 45.0% in June (from 54.6% YoY), with both the petrol (35.8%) and diesel (9.3%) shares falling to new lows.
Bestsellers in France
CleanTechnica reports that Tesla’s merged Model Y and Model 3 volumes, which hit an all-time high for the brand in June with 8,301 units delivered, aided France’s new EV record high. This is a significant increase from their combined units of 3,807 a year ago.
With 4,335 units sold, the Tesla Model Y was the best-selling BEV in June. It is also the eighth best-selling vehicle in France year to date in 2023.
The Tesla Model 3 came in second in the June BEV rankings, with the Fiat 500e coming in third.
The MG4 was fourth (its highest-ever ranking), and the Dacia Spring was fifth (the 14th overall bestseller in France, YTD).
The Renault Megane had its greatest monthly volume since December, with 2,377 units sold, placing sixth. This resulted in six BEV models selling over 2,000 units per month in June, a new high. The Peugeot e-208 is just a little behind.
This month’s BEV model data is limited, so we can’t say if any newcomers have entered the French market. The Jeep Avenger’s June volume was 441 units, up from 334 last month, placing it 16th.
Due to shipping lulls in the first quarter, the Tesla Model 3 was 2nd in June but 4th in the chart above. The Model Y, now made in Europe, can deliver more consistent monthly volumes.
As the French BEV market develops, we anticipate fewer significant rank changes in the top 20. The new Jeep Avenger should join the top 20 next month if its trajectory continues.
