Canadian commercial automaker Lion Electric formally introduced its all-new electric Class 5 truck Lion5 at the Advanced Clean Transportation (“ACT”) Expo on May 3, per the press release.

Remarkably, the brand was also the one that engineered and produced the 800v LionBattery packs, which will power the Lion5.

“…It is because of the success of the Lion6 that we are able to introduce today our next generation platform, the Lion5, the premier vehicle for last mile delivery and more, featuring the first application of LionBattery, our in-house designed and manufactured battery packs.”

 Lion Electric CEO Brian Piern

About the Lion5

Lion claims the all-electric commercial truck cab chassis has the desired Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) Class 5 design elements. It also provides variants with GVWRs ranging from 19,500 lbs to 26,000 lbs (Class 6).

The automaker also noted that Lion5 has 315 horsepower, 2,360 lb-ft of torque, and supports up to 30,000 lbs GCWR, depending on whether payload capacity, towing capability, or both are required.

The Lion5 will offer superior ride and handling features, which are attributable to the following design elements:

  • low center of gravity
  • well-balanced weight distribution front-to-back with the low cab forward (“LCF”) design
  • LionBattery packs placement
  • adaptive auto-leveling 4-wheel independent suspension system standard equipped on select model variants

Apart from these, Lion has also equipped the electric truck with the following safety and traction features:

  • electronic stability control (“ESC”)
  • traction control
  • hill start assist
  • a limited-slip differential

Additionally, the front of the Lion5 offers plenty of space due to its 96-inch wide cab. It is intended to be stationary and has the option of a cutaway configuration. It allows for a smooth passthrough between any suited body upfit and the cab.

Lion designed the steps to curve into the cab, allowing easy vision from the driver’s or passenger’s seats, depending on which door is open. The adaptive independent suspension variations contain a configurable feature that lowers the vehicle by 3 inches when opening the door, increasing safety and simplicity of entry and exit.

 Lion Electric CEO Brian Piern
