Electric vehicle giant Tesla has started releasing the latest point version of its Full Self-Driving (Supervised) software as part of a new update this week.
FSD (Supervised) v12.3.5 rollout
Tesla has been releasing the new FSD (Supervised) v12.3.5 to its electric vehicle owners, which is included with the latest 2024.3.20 software update.
This FSD (Supervised) v12.3.5 rollout ensued after the Musk-led company just released the v12.3.4 in early April. Since Tesla delivered its promise to eliminate the “beta” moniker, it has continuously launched new versions of its v12 software over the recent months.
FSD v12’s role in Tesla’s full autonomy goal
According to Not A Tesla App, the new FSD (Supervised) v12 replaces more than 300,000 lines of explicit C++ code with a single end-to-end neural network to revolutionize city driving. Notably, Tesla trained the neural network on millions of video clips from its own electric vehicle fleet.
It is a crucial part of the electric automaker’s strategy to achieve full autonomy across its electric vehicle lineup.
In hindsight, the initial v12 software updates started reaching Tesla employees in November last year. In the following month, Chief Executive Elon Musk asserted that the software was taking further tests before a wider rollout.
Tesla’s push to expand FSD customer base
The American electric automaker has recently initiated a full-out foray on the FSD (Supervised) platform. Earlier this month, Tesla proudly announced its milestone of more than 1 billion cumulative miles driven on FSD in 2024
Tesla also declared an almost 50% price cut in FSD (Supervised)’s monthly subscription fee from $199 to $99 earlier this month. In addition, it also lowered the software’s outright price from $12,000 to $8,000 in the United States.
The Musk-led company has also launched a month-long free FSD (Supervise) trial for all EVs capable of using the software. CEO Musk also instructed its employees to offer FSD test drives as part of the delivery process.
Excitingly, CEO Musk also announced Tesla’s plans to finally introduce the new Robotaxi on August 8. Tesla will conduct its Q1 2024 Earnings Call on Tuesday, which will provide us with more details about the FSD (Supervised) and Robotaxi, among others.
In hindsight, Tesla announced plans to license the FSD software to its competitors, potentially delivering a major revenue source in the future. Once it proves the FSD’s higher level of safety compared to average human drivers, many automakers will surely acquire the system to improve their models’ appeal to American customers.
