South Korean battery giant LG Energy Solution (LGES) announced its new partnership with American semiconductor maker Qualcomm Technologies on Sunday. According to the press release, the two companies will develop cutting-edge battery management system (BMS) diagnostic solutions to extend an electric vehicle’s battery life.
Partnership details
LGES and Qualcomm will work together to develop and produce advanced BMS advanced solutions.
The South Korean company will leverage its battery diagnostic software, while Qualcomm will bring its Snapdragon® Digital ChassisTM platform to the table. Combining the two companies’ technologies will enable them to produce an innovative BMS solution that can potentially extend EV battery life.
“Our work with Qualcomm Technologies intends to create differentiated customer value by enabling real-time battery health diagnosis as well as the development of battery management solutions that are directly linked to driving information.”
Hyuksung Chung, Vice President of Business Development Group at LGES
BMS development plans
As mentioned, LGES and Qualcomm will develop their planned BMS on the Snapdragon Digital Chassis platform.
This high-tech platform will substantially boost computing power by more than 80X with extra AI processing blocks. The Snapdragon Digital Chassis will also improve battery analysis algorithms through AI technologies.
Significance
LGES believes that BMW is a crucial technology, enabling them to observe and manage battery consumption to guarantee optimal performance.
Such solutions will offer electric vehicle owners key information about the battery, including current, voltage, and temperature. Having access to this information enables owners to determine and prevent battery-related issues.
“The importance of safe and healthy battery management is increasing with the growth of the electric vehicle market. We expect to be able to show customers overwhelming and differentiated customer value through our cooperation with Qualcomm Technologies.”
Hyuksung Chung, Vice President of Business Development Group at LGES
All that considered, BMS solutions-provided data is expected to be increasingly important once EVs integrate daily activities such as online shopping, gaming, and other entertainment features. It would not be surprising, given that electric automakers have started to improve EVs’ functionality beyond transportation to “multi-purpose” spaces.
