South Korean automaker Hyundai, through its American business arm, reported record-breaking sales of 70,812 units in April 2023. It indicates a year-on-year increase of nearly 15%.

In Q1 2023, the automaker’s overall sales grew 15.3% YoY to 255,261 units.

The same upward trend is noted in its electric vehicle sales.

“Our dealers are experiencing high demand for Hyundai product and our focus is to provide customers with the world class purchasing experience they are expecting.

Hyundai continues to grow market share led by a diverse line-up, including the recently on-sale IONIQ 6 which swept the World Car of the Year awards at the New York International Auto Show.”

Hyundai Ioniq 5 & 6 sales in the US – April 2023

In terms of its BEV sales, Hyundai reported 3,213 units in April (up 20% YoY). However, it must be noted that this figure does not include Kona Electric, as its data are currently unavailable. Remarkably, it marks the brand’s first monthly record above 3,000 units.

April results:

  • Hyundai Ioniq 5: 2,323 (down 13% YoY)
  • Hyundai Ioniq 6: 890 (new)
  • Hyundai Kona Electric: N/A
  • Total Ioniq family: 3,213 (up 20% YoY) and 4.5% share

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 suffered a minimal sales decline of 13% YoY to 2,323 units, which may be partly due to its ineligibility to the $7,500 federal tax credit. On the other hand, the new Hyundai Ioniq 6 hit 890 in April.

Hyundai Ioniq 5/Ioniq 6 sales in the US – YTD

Year to date, Hyundai reported sales of over 9,000 Ioniq 5 and 6 units in the US, representing a YoY growth of 3%.

YTD results:

  • Hyundai Ioniq 5: 8,059 (down 10% YoY)
  • Hyundai Ioniq 6: 1,112 (new)
  • Hyundai Kona Electric: N/A
  • Total Ioniq family: 9,171 (up 3% YoY) and 3.6% share

In retrospect, Hyundai Ioniq 5 sold 22,982 units in FY 2022 with a 3.2% share.

Meanwhile, the official statistics do not include other all-electric or plug-in hybrid model sales figures. They are included in the same count as traditional or non-rechargeable hybrid vehicles.

Unfortunately, the South Korean automaker’s sales will temporarily weaken as the Inflation Reduction Act disqualified imported EVs from the $7,500 federal tax credit. In response, Hyundai is now investing in a local production plant.
