Tesla gets the world’s biggest casting machine, the Giga Press. The automaker will use it for Cybertruck’s body.
IDRA has been recently posting videos of the assembly process of its 9,000-ton Giga Press, considered the largest casting machine in the market today. The Giga Press will be used by Tesla to produce its Cybertruck’s body.
IDRA’s been teasing the all-new 9,000-ton Giga Press for a while now. According to reports, the official launch of the giant machine will happen at an open house event in Italy next week.
There were a lot of speculations before that the Giga Press was for Tesla, as the automaker stated before that it would order another Giga Press for its Cybertruck.
A Twitter used reposted a video of IDRA’s assembly of the Giga Press, and Elon Musk confirmed that Tesla would use it for Cybertruck. He replied to the tweet with a: “Cybertruck body.”
According to electrek, Tesla has been investing in casting and alloy tech for quite some time now. This makes it possible for the automaker to cast larger parts, making the manufacturing process easier.
IDRA has already supplied Giga Press for Tesla before. IDRA installed the automaker’s first Giga Press in its Fremont Factory, which operated last 2020. Accordingly, the machine was the first of its kind and had a clamping force of 55,000 to 61,000 kilonewtons (5,600 to 6,200 tf).
Meanwhile, Elon Musk previously noted that Cybertruck would need a Giga Press that exceeds the 6-000 tons used for the Model Y.
He remarked that the Cybertruck’s underbody would require at least 8-000 ton Giga Press.
He stated before, “We’re actually going to be using even bigger casting machines for the rear body of the Cybertruck because it’s a bigger vehicle and you’ve got a long truck bed that’s going to support a lot of load,” via Teslarati.
Musk also previously stated that the Cybertruck will begin production in 2023.
