According to Finance Yahoo, the two parties will co-develop sensor-based solutions to help keep off conditions leading to thermal runaway in EV batteries. This phenomenon causes high temperatures within the battery cell and could result in a fire.

Some industries are shifting to electrified power sources, and specifically for the automotive industry, global EV sales doubled in 2021 from the previous year to almost 7 million.

Automakers look to reduce safety risks

Many of these vehicles use lithium-ion batteries as an energy source, which could present rare but critical safety risks, which include fires that can affect drivers on the road, homeowners who have electric vehicles parked in their garages, and shipping handlers bringing EVs to their final destinations.

Automakers are looking to incorporate technology to offer enhanced safety to help ease those risks.

As the world transitions to electric powered vehicles, automakers are faced with the need to provide lithium-ion batteries that function properly and safely during all stages of their lifecycle. At Honeywell, we are supporting this transition with ready-now solutions to help our customers mitigate safety risks as they expand their electric vehicle portfolios.

Victor Verissimo, general manager of the Transportation line of business of Honeywell Sensing and Safety Technologies

Verissimo added that by working with Nexceris to develop an improved suite of battery monitoring sensors, Honeywell would help manufacturers strengthen their battery health monitoring systems to be capable to detect thermal runaway conditions even sooner.

Collaboration with global automakers for advanced gas detection solutions

The companies will cooperate with leading global vehicle manufacturers to provide advanced gas detection solutions in EV battery packs for early intervention, helping avoid expensive property damage and safety issues.

Our work with Honeywell will help us empower the global transition to electric vehicles through enhanced battery monitoring. Fires from lithium-ion batteries are dangerous and often difficult to contain after they start. By combining our shared expertise in battery sensing and gas detection technology with Honeywell’s extensive manufacturing capabilities, we will be working toward offering our vehicle manufacturing customers a more advanced safety solution and meeting the growing demand for lithium-ion batteries.

Kyle Shen, president and CEO of Nexceris

Honeywell provides a broad range of lithium-ion battery safety and performance solutions, which includes sensors used in battery management systems to monitor EV batteries’ health, gas detection solutions used all through the electrical safety personal protective equipment and the manufacturing process, offering protection to workers and letting them operate safely in risky conditions.

Strategic alliance formed in 2020

Notably, Honeywell and Nexceris formed its strategic alliance in 2020 to address safety of lithium-ion battery system for energy storage applications, merging Honeywell’s early warning smoke detection and Li-ion Tamer’s off-gas detection technology for a safe way to protect various facilities.
