American car rental firm Hertz and ridesharing service provider Uber announced the European expansion of its North American partnership on January 17. Evening Standard reported that Hertz committed to supplying an additional 10,000 electric cars to Uber by 2025.
“Hertz continues to accelerate the drive toward sustainability and our partnership with Uber significantly advances that goal. By making EVs available to rideshare drivers, we will not only contribute to reducing emissions in European cities but also expand opportunities for people to experience the benefits of electrification.”
Hertz CEO Stephen Scherr
Initially, the EV rentals agreement was forged in the United States involving the provision of 50,000 Tesla rentals to Uber drivers.
Agreement
The expanded partnership commits Hertz to provide additional 10,000 electric vehicles to Uber drivers across capital cities in Europe, which will begin this month in London.
Notably, this agreement is essential for the partners’ target of up to 25,000 EVs for Uber’s fleet by 2025. Per the report, their project will offer many EV choices, including Polestar 2 and Tesla Model 3 cars.
After London, it will gradually expand to Paris and Amsterdam this year.
“As the largest mobility platform in the world, we know that our impact goes beyond our technology. Climate change is the most urgent global challenge which we must all tackle together – now is the time to accelerate. Expanding our partnership with Hertz into Europe will significantly boost our transition to zero-emissions, helping drivers reduce running costs and cleaning up urban transport. We aim to become a 100% electric platform across Europe by 2030. “
Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi
London has 15% of Uber’s overall cars in Britain’s capital, with more than 7,000 EVs in service. It is also the company’s top city for EV deployment worldwide.
Pricing
As per the partners, the pricing is yet to be confirmed once the rental cars reach London roads.
Nonetheless, Uber claims it will compete with rental cars from Uber partners in the UK. The company also noted that the deal would exempt Uber drivers from congestion or emission-zone charges.
Hertz’s goal of becoming one of the biggest EV rental fleets in the world will be supported by this expanded relationship. Meanwhile, Uber will be aided in its goal to establish a zero-emission platform in North America and Europe by 2030.
