Michigan-based automaker General Motors and South Korean tech giant Samsung SDI initially announced their plans to co-develop a $3 billion US battery cell production plant in late April 2023. However, the partners have not yet determined the specific location for the joint venture then.

Finally, the two major players in the electric vehicle industry have decided on the project location. Governor Eric Holcomb announced Tuesday that the partners picked the state of Indiana for the new battery cell factory.

As EV-a2z previously reported, the facility is set to be operational in 2026.

About the project

As mentioned, the new Indiana battery cell plant is worth $3 billion in investment.

Gov. Holcomb indicated in his announcement that the companies would erect the facility east of New Carlisle. It will apparently generate about 1,700 manufacturing jobs for local residents.

GM and Samsung SDI expect the planned battery factory to have an initial production output of over 30 GWh, raising GM’s total US battery cell capacity to around 160 GWh. Notably, it will have nickel-rich prismatic and cylindrical cell production lines.

According to GM’s press release in late April 2023, the battery factory will support its target of reaching an annual EV production of 1 million units in an undisclosed timeline. All we know is that the factory will start battery production in 2026.

“GM’s supply chain strategy for EVs is focused on scalability, resiliency, sustainability, and cost-competitiveness. Our new relationship with Samsung SDI will help us achieve all these objectives.

The cells we will build together will help us scale our EV capacity in North America well beyond 1 million units annually.”

Mary Barra, GM Chair and CEO

The state of Indiana is yet to finalize the incentives it would offer to the joint venture. However, it asserted that the computation will be “performance-based.” Apart from that, Northern Indiana Public Service Company, Indiana Michigan Power, and St. Joseph County would also provide additional incentives.

The factory strengthens GM’s presence in Indiana, where it already operates five facilities, including its Fort Wayne Assembly plant. Most notably, it would aid both GM and Samsung SDI in qualifying for the strict battery requirements for the federal tax credits of up to $7,500.
