“Our dealers are an important enabler of our all-electric future and, in many cases, will be the catalyst for EV adoption in communities that would otherwise have limited EV infrastructure. Combined with their exceptional ability to service EV drivers across North America, our dealers are now helping to make charging possible across much of the continent.”

GM EV Ecosystem VP Hoss Hassani

GM aims to deploy 40,000 level 2 chargers across the country. As of now, the first chargers under the program have already been deployed in Marshfield, Wisconsin, and Owosso, Michigan.

GM’s Dealer Community Charging Program

GM’s new charging program offers its participating dealers about ten 19.2-kilowatt Level 2 charging stations. Remarkably, it would be open to every electric vehicle, regardless of the brand.

As for the locations, the program aims to build AC chargers in urban and rural areas with a major lack of charging infrastructure. Apart from GM dealers, accessible places like hospitals, schools, parks, malls, etc., will also receive chargers under the charging program.

Why GM dealership?

GM VP Hoss Hassani claims that 90% of American households are just 10 miles away from GM dealerships. That said, it is a perfect platform for GM to reach all areas of the US.

“Our dealers are deeply involved and trusted in their communities and are well positioned to determine locations that expand access to EV charging, including at small businesses, entertainment venues, schools, and other popular destinations.”

GM EV Ecosystem VP Hoss Hassani

Notably, more than 1000 GM dealers have already participated in the new charging program. This number accounts for a quarter of all the automaker’s dealers in North America.

General Motors is undoubtedly putting extra effort and resources into promoting electric vehicle adoption. In fact, it has also launched EV Live to virtually educate buyers about electric vehicles.

“GM is taking a comprehensive approach to help put everyone in an EV. This includes great vehicles, accessible and reliable charging infrastructure, and free educational resources to help make the transition to EVs as seamless as possible. Combined, these efforts will manifest our all-electric future.”

GM EV Ecosystem VP Hoss Hassani

This special project indicates that leading automakers now consider charging infrastructures important in aiding electric vehicle uptake. With such initiatives, the common problems that EV drivers face on the road, such as road anxiety and fear of not finding a functional charger, will be reduced gradually.
