American automaker Ford reported a sales growth of 2% to 140,548 units in January 2023. Meanwhile, its luxury brand Lincoln had a 1.2% sales growth to 140,548 units. Overall, the company sold 146,356 units in the first month of the new year, representing a year-on-year increase of 2%.

Ford BEV sales in the US – January 2023

Ford started strongly in 2023 by more than doubling its sales of battery electric vehicles (BEVs). The automaker sold 5,247 BEVs in January, representing a YoY increase of 104%. Remarkably, that total also accounts for around 3.7% of Ford’s total volume.

Ford’s BEV portfolio currently consists of the following models:

  • The Ford Mustang Mach-E
  • The new Ford F-150 Lightning electric pickup
  • Ford E-Transit commercial van

Remarkably, all of these models reported a significant YoY sales growth in January 2023.

Below are the January 2023 results for Ford BEVs:

ModelSales and Growth
Ford Mustang Mach-E2,626, up 11%
Ford F-150 Lightning2,264, up 3,494%
Ford E-Transit357, up 159%
Total5,247, up 104% (3.7% share)

Ford sold 2,264 F-150 Lightning models in January 2023. The factory’s initial output volume appears to have been around 2,000 units or more (25,000-30,000 units per year). Nonetheless, its production and sales could climb to a higher level in the future, possibly in late 2023.

Meanwhile, Ford Mustang Mach-E continues to dominate the automaker’s BEV sales with 2,626 units in January, up 11% YoY. Unfortunately, there was no available data on Ford Mustang Mach-E’s January production rate.

Nonetheless, its FY 2022 production results totaled 77,959 units. It is worth noting that this result does not cover the Chinese market, where the EV is assembled. Nonetheless, Ford plans to boost its production threefold from 2022’s record to 270,000 units per year in the future.

On the other hand, Ford sold 357 E-Transit vans in January. Despite the minimal result, the EV has still a strong potential to rebound in the coming months.

For comparison, Ford sold 61,575 units in FY 2022, representing a YoY increase of 127% and a volume share of 3.3%.

Below are the FY 2022 results for Ford BEVs:

ModelSales and Growth
Ford Mustang Mach-E39,458, up 45%
Ford F-150 Lightning15,617 (new)
Ford E-Transit15,617 (new)
Total61,575, up 127% (3.3% share)

As we all know, Ford is the second leading automaker in North America, after Tesla. It would be interesting to see how this brand would fare in the full year of 2023 as it continues to compete with the Musk-led EV company.
