Electric vehicle battery replacements are rare, according to a recent study by Seattle-based company Recurrent.
Only below 3% of electric vehicle battery packs have been replaced in 2011 and 2024 model year units so far. However, it must be noted that the study did not include high-profile recalls such as the issue with the Chevrolet Bolt and Hyundai Kona Electric.
Tech innovations extend battery life
According to the study, most electric vehicle batteries remain in cars thus far. It revealed that only 2.5% of power batteries have been replaced from 2011 to 2024 model year electric vehicles.
“Across all years and models, outside of big recalls, only 2.5% have been replaced. This increase from last year is entirely due to older cars. For cars older than 2015, replacement rates are 13%, but under 1% for cars from 2016 and newer.”

The progressive development in battery management systems and thermal management systems significantly helps to improve electric vehicle battery life, resulting in fewer replacements.
Automakers relieve financial burden through warranty
The study also found that even safety recalls associated with batteries have not caused a substantial financial burden to electric vehicle owners.
Automakers shoulder the battery replacement-related costs if it is under warranty. It seems to be the case with GM’s GMC Hummer EV batteries and Rivian’s all-electric adventure vehicles.
One of Hummer EV owners even shared his experience regarding his unit’s battery replacement.
“GM called and asked if they could have my battery for an engineering study. They offered me $250.00, the new battery, and a loaner vehicle. Dealer turned it around in one day, as this was the second time they replaced my battery. Win win for everyone.”

Reassurance on major EV concern
Critics tend to cite battery replacements as one of the main reasons electric vehicles are inadequate replacements for traditional internal combustion engine-powered vehicles. This is unsurprising, considering that power batteries can account for as much as 50% of overall value.
Therefore, owners may experience tremendous frustration when it comes to EV battery replacements. Fortunately, Recurrent’s study is now trying to address this prevailing issue.
With its findings, Recurrent can reassure current and potential customers that battery replacements on electric vehicles do not transpire frequently.
