CATL saw its electric vehicle power batteries’ global market share decrease in January. The report noted that its growth rate was lower than the average for the battery industry. Despite this, the Chinese power battery giant is still the most significant player in the market.
South Korean market research firm SNE Research’s latest report revealed that January’s global EV battery installations totaled 33.0 GWh. That figure represents an increase of 18.1 percent year-on-year.
Top 10 EV battery companies in terms of global installations: CATL maintained its ranking position
In January, CATL installed 11.2 GWh of batteries, a 6.5 percent increase from the 10.5 GWh installed during the same month in the previous year.
It maintained its number one position with a market share of 33.9 percent, despite being lower than the 37.6 percent share held the same month in the previous year.
The report noted that BYD increased the number of power batteries installed in January by 78.8 percent, from 3.3 GWh to 5.8 GWh. It was ranked second with a market share of 17.6 percent, an increase from its share of 11.6 percent during the same month in the previous year.
Meanwhile, the number of power batteries that LG Energy Solution installed in January increased by 51.3 percent year-over-year to 4.3 GWh. The South Korean company came in third place with a market share of 13.0 percent, an increase from the 10.1 percent it held a year ago.
The Japanese company Panasonic came in at number four with an 11.2 percent share, and the South Korean company Samsung SDI reached number five with a 5.5 percent share. SK On came in at number six with a 4.7 percent share.
The Chinese companies CALB, Gotion High-tech, Eve Energy, and Sunwoda finished the month of January in seventh, eighth, ninth, and tenth place, respectively, with shares of 2.5 percent, 2.1 percent, 2.0 percent, and 1.6 percent.
As a result of disruptions caused by the New Year holiday to the production of electric vehicle companies, the number of power battery installations in China dropped significantly in January compared to December.
CATL shares declines
According to data made public on February 10 by the China Automotive Battery Innovation Alliance (CABIA), the amount of power battery installations in China was 16.1 GWh in January. It represents a decrease of 0.3 percent year-on-year and 55.4 percent from December’s figure of 36.1 GWh.
Although CATL’s installed base of 7.17 GWh in January proceeded to rank first in China’s power battery installed base, the company’s share dropped from 49.49 percent in December to 44.41 percent in January.
BYD ranked second with a share of 34.12 percent of the power battery installed base in January, with 5.51 GWh. Meanwhile, CALB and Eve Energy ranked third and fourth, respectively, with 4.93 percent and 3.94 percent shares.
