Hyundai has just released the official EPA-estimated range and energy usage evaluations for the all-new 2023 Hyundai Ioniq 6 model.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) develops and implements environmental regulations, sponsors and conducts research, and guards against serious health risks to people and the environment.
Hyundai Ioniq 6 Receives Outstanding EPA Range Ratings Based using the same 800V E-GMP platform as the IONIQ 5.
The streamliner provides advanced capabilities such as vehicle-to-load (V2L), superfast charging (up to 80% in as little as 18 minutes), and cutting-edge technology.
At the Los Angeles Auto Show, Hyundai claimed the IONIQ 6 would travel 340 miles on a single charge and was one of the most productive EVs on the market, with a super low drag coefficient of 0.22.
The most efficient version
The findings are pretty incredible, with the most efficient version (out of six trim levels) having an EPA combined range of 361 miles (581 km) and energy usage of 140 MPGe, which is equivalent to 241 watthours/mile (150 Wh/km). It exceeds the 340 miles that had been predicted.
2023 Hyundai Ioniq 6 finished EPA-estimated range and energy consumption:
IONIQ 6 Trim | Final EPA est. range (miles) | IONIQ 6 MPGe combined |
IONIQ 6 SE RWD Long Range (18-inch wheels) | 361 | 140 241 Wh/mi (150 Wh/km) |
IONIQ 6 SE AWD Long Range (18-inch wheels) | 316 | 121 279 Wh/mi (173 Wh/km) |
IONIQ 6 SEL RWD (20-inch wheels) | 305 | 117 288 Wh/mi (179 Wh/km) |
IONIQ 6 SEL AWD (20-inch wheels) | 270 | 103 327 Wh/mi (203 Wh/km) |
IONIQ 6 Limited RWD (20-inch wheels) | 305 | 117 288 Wh/mi (179 Wh/km) |
IONIQ 6 Limited AWD (20-inch wheels) | 270 | 103 327 Wh/mi (203 Wh/km) |
The Ioniq 6, with a 77.4-kilowatt-hour (kWh) battery, is scored between 270 miles (434 km) and 361 miles (434 km) depending on trim, powertrain (rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive), and wheel option (18-inch or 20-inch) (581 km).
The most effective version is the Ioniq 6 SE RWD Long Range, which has smaller wheels (18 inches), rear-wheel drive (for less weight), and essential standard equipment (again for less weight).
Compared to the RWD version, adding a front motor for all-wheel drive reduces the range by more than 12% (to 316 miles).
The transition to a higher trim and 20-inch wheels reduces the range to 305 miles (by 15.5%), and the combination of 20-inch wheels and AWD reduces the range to 270 miles (down 25 percent).
E-GMP findings are outstanding
Nevertheless, the findings for the E-GMP (Electric Global Modular Platform)-powered electric sedan are outstanding.
Hyundai even indicated that the Ioniq 6 SE RWD Long Range’s 140 MPGe rating fits two Lucid Air models (have dual motors powering all four wheels and a top speed of 168 mph).
We can only add that the Hyundai Ioniq 6 is a true successor to the Hyundai Ioniq Electric, which was also among the most productive models on the market a few years ago.
According to the WLTP (Worldwide Harmonized Light-Duty Test Procedure) test cycle, range ratings in Europe are also outstanding, with up to 614 km (382 miles) on a single charge.
The drag coefficient of 0.22 (even 0.21 in South Korea, where the car is accessible with tiny cameras instead of side mirrors) is one of the keys to achieving such outstanding results.
IONIQ 6’s ultra-low drag coefficient of 0.22[iii] is assisted by a low nose, active air flaps, wheel gap reducers, elliptical wing-inspired spoiler with winglet, slight boattail structure, separation traps on both sides of the rear bumper, full underbody cover, deflectors, and reduced wheel-arch gaps

Hyundai Motor North America’s vice president of product planning and mobility strategy, Olabisi Boyle, stated:
Continually improving the efficiency of our vehicles is always a top priority for our development teams. Instead of just adding a larger battery to increase the range, we chose to optimize IONIQ 6’s aerodynamic performance and its Electric-Global Modular Platform for efficiency to produce these long driving ranges

Hyundai also revealed that the Hyundai Ioniq 6 would be accessible in US dealerships this spring.
