Italian electric motorcycle maker Energica and German tech giant Siemens decided to extend their partnership by another three years to develop better batteries, RideApart reported.
Partnership leverages software for improved battery tech
Energica leverages Siemens’ advanced software solutions to develop and test its innovations in battery technology.
Siemens’ advanced 3D simulation and CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) software has been helping Energica optimize the battery performance of its models.
According to the report, Energica utilizes a wide range of advanced software solutions developed by its German partner. One of these solutions is the NX advanced CAD (Computer-Aided Design) software.
The NX enables designers to virtually organize and test various configurations, which pertains to electric bike batteries in Energica’s case.
Moreover, Siemens’ Simcenter Amesim allows design engineers to evaluate and optimize performance virtually. The Simcenter STAR-CCM+ CFD software’s addition enables engineers to test batteries virtually while operating under simulated real-world conditions.
Siemens claims its battery design and testing technology substantially reduces development time by up to 75% compared to typical CFD methods.
Three more tears to reshape the electric motorcycle market
Research and Development necessary to develop some of the world’s most powerful electric motorcycles are undoubtedly complex tasks.
The design, development, and production of key components like power batteries and electric motors tend to take years and exhaust a lot of resources.
All these considered, it is no longer surprising that Energica decided to extend its partnership with Siemens for another three years. As apparent, the Italian company still needs Siemens’ advanced software solutions for its ongoing battery development and testing efforts.
Energica Motor Company CTO Giampiero Testoni commented on the extended partnership.
“Cutting-edge technological development is the basis of every Energica project. This is why we have dedicated important efforts in the field of battery technology, for which we have developed exclusive know-how over the last decade. Thanks to the experience gained, we can manage the entire process, from the design to the assembly of the batteries.”
Giampiero Testoni, Energica Motor Company CTO
Siemens’ Battery Industry Senior Director Puneet Sinha emphasized the company’s commitment to accelerate the shift to electric mobility.
“Siemens is proud to continue its collaboration with Energica and support its innovation with our transformative digital twin-based software solutions and expertise. It’s another great example of how leaders and pioneers are adopting Siemens Xcelerator to explore the electrification of the mobility industry and build a sustainable battery industry.”
Puneet Sinha, Siemens’ Battery Industry Senior Director
Unlocking the full potential of EV battery tech
Energica and Siemens’ renewed partnership can help unlock the full potential of electric vehicle battery technology owing to their powerful combination: Energica’s expertise in high-performance electric motorcycles and Siemens’ advanced software solutions.
The innovative software streamlines the design and testing process, significantly reducing development time. Moreover, it allows Energica to equip its models with innovative batteries.
Engineers can also refine battery design regarding range, power output, and lifespan, among others, by simply evaluating data from its virtual tests. As a result, they can develop one of the world’s most advanced battery technology.
