Daimler Truck North America (DTNA) announced a new joint venture for an electric truck charging network along with its partners NextEra Energy and BlackRock Alternatives on April 27.
BlackRock Alternatives’ Climate Infrastructure unit BlackRock reportedly manages an enormous fund worth $650M.
Greenlane project
The press release noted that the Greenlane JV will “design, develop, install and operate a US nationwide, high-performance zero-emission public charging and hydrogen fueling network for medium- and heavy-duty battery-electric and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles.”
The three major companies also revealed site design illustrations as a significant milestone in the project’s development.
As for the first site, the press release indicated that it would be in Southern California. The JV is still acquiring numerous additional sites across different freight routes along Texas‘ East and West Coasts.
Purpose
Greenlane aims to solve the pressing need for a widely accessible national electric charging infrastructure for commercial vehicles, particularly for long-haul freight operations.
“Greenlane is designed to begin to tackle one of the greatest hurdles to the trucking industry’s decarbonization – infrastructure.
The nation’s fleets can only transform with the critical catalyst of publicly accessible charging designed to meet the needs of medium- and heavy-duty vehicles.
Together with our strong partners, BlackRock and NextEra Energy Resources, we are launching Greenlane to address the industry’s unique demands, support our mutual customers, and provide a dual benefit to all electric vehicle drivers who will be able to utilize this new network. We’re excited to take this next step and look forward to sharing more of Greenlane’s plans in the future.”
John O’Leary, DTNA President, and CEO
The first focus of Greenlane will be battery-electric medium- and heavy-duty vehicles, followed by hydrogen refueling stations for fuel cell trucks, with future plans to open up access to light-duty vehicles.
