Plug-In cars in China continue to increase amid continuous lockdowns in the country.

RANKED ACCORDING TO MODELRANKED IN AUTO BRAND

The overall passenger market in China declined last April. The market declined by 43% year-over-year due to continuous lockdowns imposed by the country, but that doesn’t stop the continuous surge in the sales of plug-in vehicles.

According to a report by Inside EVs citing EV Volumes, around 280,614 new passenger electric plug-in cars were registered in China last April. An increase of 61% compared to a year ago.

China also represented over half of the global plug-in registrations in April.

Results for April (estimated from market share):

BEVs – Approximately 213,000 with a 22% market share

PHEVs – Approximately 68,000 with a 7% market share

Total of around 280,614 with a 29% share.

Data from Cleantechnica (Bold text are fully electric vehicles)

Accordingly, 80% of the vehicles in the top 20 models are fully electric ones. In April, BYD dominated the Chinese market. Out of the top 20 models, 9 of them are from BYD, making seven models of it in the top ten.

Notably, a huge name, specifically Tesla, is not on the list. This is due to the fact that it recently shut down its operations during the month. However, they are currently ramping up their production again.

RANKED IN AUTO BRAND

The top plug-in brand shows that BYD is taking the lead.

The top plug-in brands by share in the segment from January to April 2022 are:

RankMake% Market Share
1.BYD27.80%
2.SAIC13.40%
3.Tesla7.80%
4.Chery4.90%
5.Geely-Volvo4.60%

It’s not surprising that BYD is dominating the list, as BYD seems to do great in positioning itself in the Chinese market. The automaker managed to deliver more than 105,000 units in April alone. The carmaker recently launched its Seal brand, with units sold more than 20,000 in 6 hours making the company the third most valuable carmaker.
